Kolkata, March 23 (NationPress) The parents of the doctor who tragically lost her life due to a horrific incident of rape and murder on the grounds of the R.G. Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata in August 2024 have officially joined the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) as basic members, as confirmed by Suvendu Adhikari, the Leader of the Opposition (LoP) in the West Bengal Assembly, on Monday.

Adhikari also noted that the party leadership has yet to determine whether any of the victim's family members will be the party's candidate for the Panihati Assembly Constituency in the North 24 Parganas district, where both the victim and her family are registered voters.

The BJP has released two candidate lists for the upcoming two-phase Assembly elections in West Bengal set for next month, but the candidate for Panihati remains unannounced.

“The decision regarding whether a family member of the victim will run for the Panihati seat is pending with our party’s central leadership. The state committee has already submitted its input on this matter, which I cannot disclose at this time. Ultimately, the final decision will be made by our central leadership,” stated LoP Adhikari on Monday night.

It is important to highlight that the deceased doctor’s body was found within the R.G. Kar premises on the morning of August 9, 2024. Following this incident, the Kolkata Police initiated an investigation and apprehended Sanjay Roy, a former civic volunteer of the city police, as the sole suspect.

Subsequently, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) took over the case after a directive from the Calcutta High Court, confirming Roy as the only accused in the rape and murder.

Eventually, a trial court in Kolkata convicted Roy and sentenced him to life imprisonment. The CBI later appealed this ruling in the Calcutta High Court, seeking the death penalty for Roy.

Point of View

The tragic murder of a medical professional underscores the deep-seated issues of safety and justice in urban areas.
