Agartala, May 12 (NationPress) - On Monday, Tripura Police successfully confiscated approximately 960 kg of dry Ganja (marijuana) cannabis, estimated to be worth Rs 4 crore, at the Churaibari inter-state gate bordering Assam in the northern district of Tripura, according to officials.
A law enforcement representative indicated that this seizure stands out as one of the largest drug confiscations this year. The drugs were cleverly hidden within electric transformers while being transported in a truck heading to Guwahati.
Acting on confidential intelligence, a police team, led by Officer-in-Charge Khokan Saha of Churaibari police station, intercepted the vehicle prior to its entry into neighboring Assam.
Upon inspecting the electric transformers, officers observed that several nuts of the electrical equipment were suspiciously loose, prompting further investigation.
A technical team subsequently examined the transformers and uncovered the Ganja, neatly packaged in 96 packets, hidden inside these machines. The driver, Ardesh Kumar (42), along with his assistant, Pramod Kumar (59), both from Uttar Pradesh, were arrested.
A case has been filed under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act 1985.
Recently, Tripura Chief Minister Manik Saha stated that while Ganja is illegally cultivated within the state and is not consumed locally, it is smuggled to other states like Bihar.
