Saharanpur, Dec 13 (NationPress) - Renowned for its exceptional wood carving, Saharanpur is now gaining international acclaim for its traditional craft.

Mohammad Dilshad, a distinguished artisan from Saharanpur, has emerged as a key figure in this remarkable transformation. Recently, he was bestowed with the Shilp Guru Award–2024 by President Droupadi Murmu.

Dilshad asserts that Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision of “Local to Global” has been instrumental in providing Indian handicrafts, particularly Saharanpur’s intricate wood carving, with a unique global identity.

Upon receiving the prestigious Shilp Guru Award, Mohammad Dilshad conveyed his heartfelt gratitude to the Ministry of Textiles, the selection committee, and everyone involved in acknowledging his craftsmanship.

He regarded this honor as a source of pride not just for himself but for his entire family and community.

“It is incredibly gratifying to see our traditional craft recognized and respected at such a prestigious level,” he remarked during an interview with IANS on Saturday.

Dilshad comes from a family with a rich legacy—he was awarded a UNESCO Award in 2005, his two sons received National Awards in 2006, another son was honored in 2008, and in 2017, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath honored him with the Lokmat Samman.

Discussing the rising global reputation of Saharanpur’s wood carving, Dilshad credited the dedication and relentless effort of local artisans. “The exquisite carvings on wood, especially sheesham, have made Saharanpur renowned worldwide,” he stated, emphasizing that this recognition stems from generations of skill and perseverance.

Dilshad firmly believes that governmental support is vital in elevating Indian handicrafts to global brands. He pointed out that increased promotion of wood carving within India has led to greater recognition internationally. “The government encourages us, provides platforms, and creates opportunities for us to showcase our work abroad. When we present our art internationally, we receive significant respect,” he added.

When asked about initiatives like One District One Product (ODOP), Dilshad recognized their pivotal role in enhancing the visibility of traditional crafts on a national scale. He believes such programs have empowered artisans by connecting them to markets, resources, and recognition that were previously unattainable.

Highlighting Prime Minister Modi’s “Local to Global” vision, Dilshad noted that it has opened new avenues for artisans to access international markets.

“Thanks to various government schemes, we can now export our products not only across India but also to foreign nations. This not only creates business opportunities but also grants us dignity and respect,” he explained.

He also mentioned that many artisans remain unaware of these schemes and emphasized the need for increased awareness to help craftsmen grow their businesses.

Reflecting on his journey after being awarded by the President, Dilshad reminisced about his childhood spent alongside his father in workshops and exhibitions, learning the craft from an early age.

“This recognition proves that through hard work and innovation within our traditions, we too can achieve the highest accolades,” he stated.

Since receiving the award, he has observed a surge in interest among visitors eager to learn about the craft, indicating a resurgence of enthusiasm for traditional artistry in Saharanpur.

Looking ahead, Dilshad expressed optimism that government policies and initiatives would motivate the younger generation to embrace traditional arts.

He highlighted workshops and training programs facilitated by the government, which teach new techniques and help artisans enhance their skills while achieving both economic growth and social respect.

Mohammad Dilshad commended the government’s efforts to uplift grassroots artisans. “When individuals who work tirelessly are honored by the President and Prime Minister on a national platform, it brings immense joy and motivation. It signifies that our art, culture, and heritage truly hold value,” he said, expressing sincere gratitude for the recognition and support extended to craftsmen across India.
