Salim Merchant Responds to A R Rahman's Comments on Communal Bias Amidst 'Ramayana' Project
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Mumbai, March 8 (NationPress) Renowned composer Salim Merchant shared his insights regarding A R Rahman's comments on communal bias.
In an exclusive conversation with IANS, he emphasized that if Rahman is scoring music for 'Ramayana'—a monumental film steeped in Indian mythology—it is difficult to accept that any communal bias exists.
Salim remarked, "I don't believe that's accurate. With all due respect to Rahman's perspective, he might have valid reasons based on his experiences. However, I feel that a composer involved in such a significant cinematic project like the 'Ramayana', which is a Hindu epic, indicates that there is no issue regarding communal aspects. Yet, that is just my opinion, and he may have his own thoughts on the matter."
To recall, Rahman had previously discussed receiving fewer work opportunities in Bollywood.
While speaking to the BBC Asian Network, the Oscar-winning musician mentioned, "Individuals devoid of creativity now hold decision-making power, and there could be a communal angle, though not directly toward me. It often feels like whispers suggesting I was booked, while the music company opted for their five other composers. I thought, 'That's fine; I can relax with my family.'"
Following a wave of criticism, Rahman posted a video clarifying that his intention was never to offend anyone.
"Dear friends, music has always served as my means to connect, celebrate, and honor a culture. India is my muse, my educator, and my home. I recognize that intentions can sometimes be misconstrued, but my objective has always been to elevate, honor, and serve through music. I never intended to cause distress, and I hope my sincerity resonates," he expressed.
