Guwahati, April 4 (NationPress) Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Friday made a subtle jab at Congress leader Gaurav Gogoi, asserting that the public will respond to his claim that only one community played a role in the nation's freedom struggle.

Speaking to reporters, CM Sarma stated: "We have an MP from Assam who demanded that the government permit Muslim individuals to perform Namaz prayers on the streets. Additionally, he claimed that only one specific community was involved in the country’s freedom movement. This statement is profoundly objectionable. People worldwide have been reaching out to me, expressing their discontent regarding the remarks made by this MP."

The CM added, "In Assam, Muslim individuals conduct Namaz prayers in Idgah and Masjid peacefully and have never requested to perform Namaz on the streets.”

CM Sarma questioned how the Congress MP could assert that only one particular community predominantly contributed to the freedom movement.

"Is he suggesting that Mahatma Gandhi had no involvement in the freedom struggle?" the Chief Minister remarked, taking a dig at Gogoi.

"At this moment, I offer my apology to the citizens of the country for the Congress MP's comments, and I trust that he will face consequences from the public," CM Sarma expressed.

During discussions on the Waqf (Amendment) Bill, 2025, Congress MP and Deputy Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha, Gaurav Gogoi, vehemently opposed the proposed legislation.

He raised alarms that the "Bill will undermine the Constitution, target minority communities, and foster societal division".

Gogoi further emphasized the crucial contributions and sacrifices made by Muslim freedom fighters during India’s independence struggle.

He contrasted their valor with the actions of certain political figures who sought mercy from colonial rulers, using this comparison to challenge narratives that unfairly depict minority groups.
