Saudi Arabia Issues Stern Warning to Iran Over Escalating Gulf Tensions
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Riyadh, March 7 (NationPress) On Saturday, Saudi Arabia issued a stern warning to Iran, urging the nation to avoid what it termed as "misguided calculations" amidst escalating tensions in the West Asia region as the conflict expands.
Iran has launched retaliatory missile and drone assaults targeting both Israel and US military installations, in addition to firing hundreds of ballistic missiles and thousands of drones towards Gulf Arab nations.
These strikes have impacted energy infrastructure, civilian areas, and US military bases across the region.
Saudi Arabia's Defence Minister, Khalid bin Salman Al Saud, relayed this warning after a meeting with Pakistan's Army Chief, Field Marshal Asim Munir.
Post-discussion, the minister expressed optimism that Iran would "act with wisdom and reason" and not undertake actions that could exacerbate the already tense situation, advising Tehran to steer clear of "misguided calculations."
Furthermore, Saudi Arabia reported successful interceptions by its air defense systems of an incoming attack.
The Kingdom confirmed that a ballistic missile targeting a military facility southeast of the capital was neutralized prior to reaching its intended destination.
According to the Saudi Defence Ministry, "A ballistic missile aimed at Prince Sultan Air Base was intercepted and destroyed," as stated in a post on X.
Additionally, Saudi officials noted that several aerial threats have been neutralized in recent days.
The Defence Ministry indicated that on Friday (local time), four drones were shot down, three in the eastern sectors of Riyadh and one to the northeast of the capital. They also reported intercepting a cruise missile over the city of Kharj.
Earlier this week, Iranian drones targeted the US Embassy in Riyadh. The Saudi Defence Ministry reported that two drones impacted the compound, resulting in "limited fire" and only minor structural damage.
In response to this incident, the US Embassy advised American citizens to refrain from visiting the compound as a precaution.
Saudi Arabia's crucial energy infrastructure has also faced assaults during these ongoing attacks. The Ras Tanura oil refinery, one of the Kingdom's principal crude processing facilities, was attacked by drones.
However, Saudi air defenses successfully intercepted the incoming drones before they could inflict any damage, according to a military spokesperson speaking to the state-run Saudi Press Agency.
The Ras Tanura refinery boasts a production capacity exceeding half a million barrels of crude oil per day, establishing it as one of the most vital oil processing sites in the nation.
