New Delhi/Bhopal, March 19 (NationPress) The Congress party in Madhya Pradesh has celebrated the Supreme Court's ruling to suspend the Madhya Pradesh High Court's verdict, thereby preserving the status of Congress member Mukesh Malhotra as a legislator pending the next hearing.
The interim relief granted by the apex court has been termed a "triumph for truth, justice, and the Constitution" by the Congress, which emphasized that the people's democratic choice in Vijaypur has been safeguarded against unwarranted political meddling.
The Supreme Court was reviewing a petition disputing the High Court's March 10 ruling that invalidated Malhotra's victory in the 2024 by-election for the Vijaypur Assembly seat in Sheopur district as "null and void".
In response to the Supreme Court's decision, State Congress President Jitu Patwari expressed his appreciation and noted that the ruling exposed underlying political agendas.
"This landmark decision has thwarted the BJP's political schemes once more. It is hoped that the BJP, which frequently disrespects democracy and the Constitution, will take heed of this judicial lesson. This marks a victory for truth, justice, democracy, and the Constitution," Patwari remarked.
Leader of Opposition (LoP) in the State Assembly and seasoned Congress figure, Umang Singhar, claimed that the court's ruling transcended an individual case.
"The electorate of Vijaypur chose Mukesh Malhotra as their MLA; however, the BJP government, intoxicated by power, alongside an Election Commission likened to a 'caged parrot', made every effort to overturn the public’s will," Singhar added.
The LoP also expressed his gratitude to Congress leader Vivek Tankha for advocating for Mukesh Malhotra in the Supreme Court.
"Truth may be challenged, but it can never be vanquished," Singhar concluded.
The Supreme Court has scheduled the case for further proceedings on July 23.
Previously, the Madhya Pradesh High Court ruled that Mukesh Malhotra failed to disclose pending criminal charges in his election affidavit, subsequently recognizing BJP candidate Ramniwas Rawat as the legitimate MLA.
During the Vijaypur by-election in November 2024, Mukesh Malhotra secured victory over Ramniwas Rawat by a margin exceeding 7,000 votes.
