New Delhi, Jan 17 (NationPress) Former Delhi deputy chief minister Manish Sisodia has reportedly taken out personal education loans amounting to Rs 1.54 crore in his wife's name to fund his son's higher education in Canada, as revealed in the AAP leader's affidavit submitted for the Jangpura Assembly constituency.
Sisodia, who transitioned from journalism to politics and is currently facing a money-laundering investigation linked to alleged discrepancies in the excise policy, disclosed the education loan under his wife Seema's name, who suffers from multiple sclerosis and requires assistance.
The loan was provided to Sisodia's homemaker wife by three individuals: Romesh Chander Mittal, Guneet Arora, and Deepali.
The affidavit lists his son Meer Sisodia as a dependent and includes details about Scotiabank, located at 392 Bay Street, Toronto, where Sisodia has established three accounts dedicated to his son's education. Additionally, it reveals foreign exchange assets totaling approximately Canadian $3,980 (around Rs 2.4 lakh) in the foreign bank.
Members of the BJP have begun questioning the conditions surrounding the Rs 1.54 crore personal loans taken by Sisodia, who is out on bail in the excise policy case, especially since he has declared his family's total assets to be merely Rs 57 lakh.
“How could he secure an education loan under his homemaker wife’s name that is nearly three times the value of their total assets?” queried an Opposition leader, casting doubts on funding from entities hostile to India’s interests.
The affidavit indicates that his wife’s outstanding loans for their son's education consist of Rs 86 lakh from Romesh Chander Mittal, Rs 58 lakh from Guneet Arora, and Rs 10 lakh from Deepali.
In addition, Sisodia's affidavit outlines his income sources, which include salary from his ministry, earnings from property, and author royalties, while his wife's income is reported as rental.
This latest affidavit, filed on Thursday, contrasts sharply with the one he submitted in 2013 during his first election campaign, which did not include any loans under the “Details of liabilities/dues to public financial institutions” section.
In that earlier affidavit, he cited an annual personal income of Rs 5.21 lakh and total family assets of around Rs 41 lakh. In the current election affidavit for 2025, he has reported assets amounting to Rs 57 lakh.
Manish Sisodia is contesting his fourth Assembly election from Jangpura, moving from his traditional seat of Patparganj in east Delhi.
He faces competition from BJP's Tarvinder Singh Marwah and Congress's Farhad Suri.
The election for Delhi's 70 Assembly seats is scheduled for February 5, with vote counting set for February 8. The AAP, which won 67 seats in 2015 and retained control with 62 seats in 2020, aims for a fourth consecutive term.
