  • Three individuals funded the loan: Romesh Chander Mittal, Guneet Arora, and Deepali.

New Delhi, Jan 17 (NationPress) Former Delhi deputy chief minister Manish Sisodia facilitated his son’s higher education in Canada by securing personal education loans totaling Rs 1.54 crore under his wife’s name, as disclosed in the AAP leader’s affidavit submitted in the Jangpura Assembly constituency.

Facing allegations of money laundering in connection with supposed irregularities in the excise policy, Sisodia has reported the educational loan under the name of his spouse, Seema, who suffers from multiple sclerosis and requires assistance.

The loans were extended to Sisodia’s homemaker wife by three lenders: Romesh Chander Mittal, Guneet Arora, and Deepali.

The affidavit lists his son, Meer Sisodia, as a dependent and provides information about Scotiabank, located at 392 Bay Street, Toronto, where Sisodia has established three distinct accounts to manage funds for his son’s education. Additionally, the affidavit indicates foreign currency assets of approximately Canadian $3,980 (or Rs 2.4 lakh) in the foreign bank.

BJP leaders have started to question the conditions under which Sisodia, currently out on bail due to his involvement in the excise policy case, has secured personal loans amounting to Rs 1.54 crore, given that he has reported his family’s total assets to be merely Rs 57 lakh.

“How has he managed to acquire an education loan in his homemaker wife’s name that is nearly three times their asset value?” questioned an Opposition leader, casting suspicion on potential funding from entities opposed to India’s interests.

In his affidavit, Sisodia identifies his wife’s outstanding loans for their son’s education: Rs 86 lakh from Romesh Chander Mittal, Rs 58 lakh from Guneet Arora, and Rs 10 lakh from Deepali.

The affidavit also enumerates Sisodia’s income sources as salary from his ministerial role, income from property, and royalties from his writings, while his wife’s income is reported as rental.

This latest affidavit, filed on Thursday, contrasts sharply with the one he submitted in 2013 during his initial election bid, which did not list any loans in the “Details of liabilities/dues to public financial institutions” section.

In that earlier document, he reported an annual personal income of Rs 5.21 lakh and total family assets of roughly Rs 41 lakh. In the current affidavit for the 2025 election, he has declared assets totaling Rs 57 lakh.

Sisodia is contesting his fourth Assembly election from Jangpura, moving away from his usual seat of Patparganj in East Delhi.

He will face off against BJP’s Tarvinder Singh Marwah and Congress’s Farhad Suri.

The election for Delhi's 70 Assembly seats is scheduled for February 5, with vote counting set for February 8. The AAP, which won 67 seats in 2015 and maintained its majority with 62 seats in 2020, is aiming for a fourth consecutive term.
