Police in Sitapur, Uttar Pradesh, arrested Avadh Ram alias Bhole Shankar on 22 September within 12 hours of him allegedly raping a six-year-old girl, after the accused opened fire on a police team and was wounded in retaliatory firing. The child, who was allegedly lured to a sugarcane field before the assault, underwent a medical examination to confirm the crime.

How the Arrest Unfolded

Circle Officer (Mahmoodabad) Kapoor Kumar said multiple police teams were constituted under the direct orders of the Sitapur Superintendent of Police to conduct continuous raids to trace the suspect. A reward of ₹25,000 had been announced for information leading to his arrest.

Acting on a tip-off from an informer, officers — including members of the Mission Shakti team — tracked the accused to a road near Berra village early on the morning of 22 September. When the teams moved in, Avadh Ram allegedly opened fire at them. Police returned fire in self-defence, and the accused sustained a leg injury. He was subsequently taken to hospital for treatment.

Evidence Recovered from the Accused

Officers recovered a revolver, two live cartridges, and ₹350 in cash from the accused at the time of arrest, according to CO Kapoor Kumar. Further legal proceedings are under way, he said.

Background: Victim's Medical Examination

The six-year-old survivor was taken for a medical examination to confirm the alleged assault. Authorities have not disclosed details about the child's current condition or the family's circumstances, in keeping with established guidelines protecting the identity and privacy of sexual assault survivors, especially minors.
