Sarbananda Sonowal: Assam Elections Will Define Indigenous Rights and Future
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Dibrugarh, April 3 (NationPress) Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal ramped up the Bharatiya Janata Party's (BJP) efforts in Upper Assam on Friday, emphasizing that the results of the forthcoming Assembly elections will crucially influence the future of Assam, as well as the safeguarding of the identity and rights of the Assamese populace.
While addressing multiple rallies in Margherita, Majuli, and Khowang to support BJP candidates Bhaskar Sharma, Bhuban Gam, and Chakradhar Gogoi, Sonowal stated that the election on April 9 is not just a political maneuver but a pivotal juncture for Assam.
"This is not merely an election; it is a commitment to uphold the self-respect, identity, and rights of the Assamese people. Our Assam, our heritage, our rights — we must advance these principles," Sonowal declared during a rally in Margherita.
Referencing the legacy of Swargadeo Chaolung Sukapha, he stressed that Assam's identity, culture, and language are deeply intertwined with its historical legacy and require protection.
He highlighted the accomplishments of the BJP-led NDA government, stating that significant actions have been undertaken to secure land rights for indigenous communities, reclaim encroached land, and preserve the state's cultural heritage.
"Assam today is built on the foundations of peace, development, and renewed assurance," Sonowal remarked.
In a strong critique of the Congress party, he accused them of undermining Assam's social structure through "vote-bank politics" and claimed that they had fostered illegal immigration in the past.
"The Congress has inflicted serious injustice upon Assam by compromising the rights of indigenous people and damaging the cultural essence of the state. The populace remembers the oppression during the Assam Movement," he stated.
In Majuli, Sonowal conveyed his best wishes ahead of Rongali Bihu and emphasized the island's international cultural importance, pointing out its traditions like Raas and Ali-Aye-Ligang.
Reflecting on his time as the previous Chief Minister of Assam, he expressed gratitude to the people of Majuli for their backing in 2016.
"Majuli is akin to my mother, shaping my political journey," he said.
Supportive of BJP candidate Bhuban Gam, Sonowal characterized him as a "humble and dedicated" leader capable of effectively serving the community.
He also highlighted development projects in Majuli, including its promotion to district status, enhanced governance access, tourism prospects, and a focus on empowering women.
Reaffirming the NDA's dedication, Sonowal stated that the BJP's manifesto comprises 31 commitments based on public input, adding that "a robust Assam will fortify India."
