Chief Minister Stalin Urges PM Modi for Urgent Actions Amid US-Iran Conflict
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Chennai, March 10 (NationPress) M.K. Stalin, the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, convened a crucial review meeting at the State Secretariat in Chennai on Tuesday to evaluate the possible repercussions of the ongoing US–Iran conflict on the state and to devise necessary response strategies.
The discussions centered around the potential economic and logistical impacts of the conflict, particularly with respect to interruptions in the supply of petroleum products and liquefied petroleum gas (LPG). Such disruptions could significantly influence households, businesses, and industries throughout Tamil Nadu.
Senior officials from various key departments participated actively, providing the Chief Minister with updates on contingency plans to address any immediate shortages.
Post-meeting, Stalin announced that he had reached out to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, urging the Union government to implement urgent actions to protect the interests of both Tamil Nadu and its citizens amidst the escalating geopolitical tensions in West Asia.
In his correspondence, the Chief Minister highlighted the need for the Centre to ensure the safety and well-being of Tamils residing and working in the Gulf region, many of whom may face consequences from the conflict's fallout. He also called on the Union government to take swift actions to safeguard Tamil Nadu's fishermen who are currently in or near the impacted waters.
Stalin pointed out that the ongoing conflict has already started to disrupt supply chains and could lead to shortages of essential fuels, including LPG cylinders. He warned that such shortages would adversely affect not just households but also commercial entities and micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs) that rely heavily on LPG for their daily operations.
Consequently, the Chief Minister urged the Union government to ensure that any shortage of LPG cylinders stemming from the conflict does not impact the public or businesses in Tamil Nadu. He also recommended the establishment of alternative arrangements to maintain an uninterrupted supply to sectors that depend significantly on commercial gas cylinders, especially in the hospitality and restaurant industries.
Furthermore, Stalin requested that the Centre guarantee sufficient power supply to mitigate any operational challenges faced by restaurants and other establishments due to disruptions in commercial LPG availability.
Officials stated that the State government would remain vigilant in monitoring the situation and coordinate with the Union government to tackle any emerging challenges.
The review meeting also addressed preparedness measures to ensure that the supply of essential commodities and energy remains stable should the conflict escalate further.
