New Delhi, Oct 3 (NationPress) In a significant development that indicates a substantial advancement in India’s defence capabilities, Air Chief Marshal A.P. Singh announced that the groundwork has officially commenced on 'Sudarshan Chakra', India’s homegrown alternative to the Iron Dome air defence system.

During a press conference in New Delhi, the IAF Chief pointed out the critical requirement for self-sufficiency in defence technology, stating, “We have collaboratively engaged with DRDO to initiate the creation of a system that will feature our integrated air command and control system (IACCS) as its core.”

The Sudarshan Chakra initiative is focused on establishing a multi-layered air defence network capable of intercepting and neutralising aerial threats such as missiles, drones, and hostile aircraft.

Modeled after Israel’s Iron Dome, known for its effectiveness in combat, India’s adaptation will be customised to suit the country’s specific strategic and geographical circumstances.

Air Chief Marshal Singh underscored the increasing significance of air power in contemporary warfare, referencing the recent Operation Sindoor as a pivotal moment. “The importance of air power has been highlighted following Operation Sindoor,” he noted, alluding to the operation that demonstrated India’s swift deployment and precision strike capabilities.

While specifics of Operation Sindoor are classified, defence experts speculate it involved coordinated air and ground operations in a high-pressure border situation.

Emphasising the necessity of Aatmanirbharta, or self-sufficiency, in defence, the IAF Chief stated that India must not remain reliant on foreign technologies.

“There is an immediate requirement for Aatmanirbharta; we cannot rely indefinitely on others,” he asserted, adding that indigenous innovation is crucial for strategic independence.

He also addressed the changing dynamics of warfare, cautioning that future conflicts will be unprecedented. “The nature of war is continually evolving. The next conflict will not mirror the last—preparation for the future is essential,” he stressed.

This statement mirrors the Indian Air Force’s broader initiative for modernisation, which includes significant investments in artificial intelligence, unmanned systems, and cyber warfare capabilities.

The Sudarshan Chakra project is anticipated to involve collaboration among the Indian Air Force, the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO), and private defence manufacturers. If successful, it will represent a major achievement in India’s pursuit of establishing a strong, indigenous defence framework capable of addressing emerging threats in an increasingly unstable global environment.
