New Delhi, April 1 (NationPress) The Supreme Court of India will be closed on April 14, 2025, to commemorate the birth anniversary of Dr. B.R. Ambedkar, who is regarded as the chief architect of the Indian Constitution.
A circular posted on the apex court’s website on Tuesday revealed, "It is hereby circulated for information of all concerned that Hon’ble the Chief Justice of India has been pleased to direct that the Supreme Court of India and its Registry shall remain closed on Monday, the 14th April, 2025 on account of the birthday of Dr. B.R. Ambedkar."
In November 2023, a statue honoring Dr. Ambedkar was inaugurated by President Droupadi Murmu within the Supreme Court grounds, celebrating Constitution Day.
Dr. Ambedkar was born on April 14, 1891, in Mhow Cantonment, now part of Madhya Pradesh. He completed his primary education in Satara (currently in Maharashtra) and attained his secondary education at Elphinstone High School in what was then Bombay. In 1912, he graduated from Bombay University with a BA in Economics and Political Science. His outstanding academic performance earned him a scholarship from the Maharaja of Baroda in 1913 to pursue his MA and PhD at Columbia University in New York.
Dr. Ambedkar took the oath as the first Law Minister of independent India and later chaired the Drafting Committee of the Constituent Assembly, guiding the creation of India’s Constitution. After the initial general elections in 1952, he became a member of the Rajya Sabha and received an honorary doctorate from Columbia University that same year. He was also awarded another honorary doctorate from Osmania University in Hyderabad in 1953. Unfortunately, Dr. Ambedkar's health declined in 1955 due to a long illness, and he passed away peacefully in his sleep on December 6, 1956, in Delhi.
