Did the Supreme Court Grant Bail to Akali Leader Majithia in DA Case?
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
New Delhi, Feb 2 (NationPress) The Supreme Court has granted bail to Bikram Singh Majithia, a prominent leader of Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD), concerning a case of disproportionate assets (DA) initiated by the Punjab Vigilance Bureau.
A panel of Justices Vikram Nath and Sandeep Mehta provided this relief, acknowledging that Majithia had previously received bail in a related case under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act.
The bench led by Justice Nath highlighted that the special leave petition (SLP) from the Punjab government, challenging the NDPS bail, was dismissed in 2025.
“Taking into account that the petitioner was granted bail in the prior NDPS case in 2022, and with the state’s SLP dismissed in 2025, coupled with the police report already submitted, we hereby grant bail, especially since the DA case relates to the period from 2006 to 2017 and the FIR was lodged in 2025,” remarked the apex court.
Majithia was taken into custody by the Punjab Vigilance Bureau on June 25 of the previous year, with his judicial remand being extended periodically.
Within just 59 days post-arrest, the Vigilance Bureau presented a comprehensive 40,000-page chargesheet in a Mohali court, accusing Majithia of possessing illegal assets valued at Rs 700 crore.
The chargesheet included testimonies from around 200 witnesses, outlined nearly 400 bank accounts, and referenced raids conducted in Punjab, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, and Delhi.
Statements from various leaders of the Akali Dal and BJP were also recorded during the investigation.
A Mohali court had earlier turned down Majithia’s bail request after nearly 10 days of daily hearings, underscoring that the investigation was ongoing and the accusations were severe.
The Vigilance Bureau has claimed that Majithia laundered over Rs 540 crore in drug money, based on inquiries from a Special Investigation Team (SIT) investigating the 2021 FIR under the NDPS Act, along with its own investigations into the DA case.
