Solo (Indonesia), July 26 (NationPress) India showcased a remarkable performance at the Badminton Asia Juniors Individual Championships on Saturday, with emerging talents Tanvi Sharma and Vennala Kalagotla earning bronze medals.
This tournament was historic for India, marking the first occasion when two Indian women’s singles players made it to the podium in the same edition.
Vennala fought valiantly in her semifinal match against China’s Liu Si Ya, ultimately falling short with scores of 15-21, 18-21 after a 37-minute duel.
At one point trailing 15-20 in the second game, Vennala saved three match points, igniting hopes for a comeback. However, a crucial error at a pivotal moment allowed Liu Si Ya to secure victory in straight games.
In the other women’s singles semifinal, the second seed Tanvi lost 13-21, 14-21 to China’s eighth seed Yin Yi Qing in a 35-minute match.
After dropping the first game, Tanvi displayed resilience in the second, racing to a 6-1 lead. However, Yin steadily leveled the match at 8-8 before pulling ahead to clinch the win.
Despite the setback, Tanvi’s performance remains commendable, especially after her runner-up finish at the US Open Super 300 just last month.
Earlier, Tanvi showcased her dominant form by advancing to the semifinals, defeating fifth seed Thalita Ramadhani Wiryawan of Indonesia 21-19, 21-14 in a quick 35-minute match.
Joining her in the semifinals was Vennala, who overcame a tough challenge from Thailand’s Janyaporn Meepanthong in a gripping 58-minute battle. Vennala claimed the first game 21-18, but Janyaporn fought back to win the second 21-17, pushing the match into a decider.
In the final game, Vennala surged ahead in the closing moments, ultimately securing a 21-18, 17-21, 21-17 victory to clinch her place in the semifinals.
