Ningbo (China), April 8 (NationPress) India’s Dhruv Kapila and Tanisha Crasto displayed remarkable resilience as they overcame Malaysia's Hoo Pang Ron and Cheng Su Yin to secure their spot in the Round of 16 on the opening day of the Badminton Asia Championships 2025 on Tuesday. The Indian pair triumphed with scores of 15-21, 21-12, 21-11 in their mixed doubles first-round encounter within this prestigious tournament.
After a challenging start where they lost the first game, Dhruv and Tanisha, currently ranked 18th in the mixed doubles category, intensified their efforts in the second game to push the match into a decisive third game. They maintained their momentum and comfortably defeated the world No. 14 duo, advancing further in the tournament.
Fellow Indians Ashith Surya and Amrutha Pramuthesh also demonstrated a strong performance, winning against Sri Lankan qualifiers Thulith Palliyaguru and Panchali Adhikari with scores of 21-9, 21-11 to reach the pre-quarterfinals.
In contrast, Rohan Kapoor and Ruthvika Gadde secured the first game but ultimately fell short in a closely contested match, losing to Malaysia's Roy King Yap and Valeree Siow with scores of 18-21, 21-17, 21-17.
Another match saw Sathish Kumar and Aadya Variyath defeated by the third-seeded Malaysian pair of Goh Soon Huat and Lai Shevon Jemie with scores of 21-18, 21-19.
Anticipation builds for the singles events, where two-time Olympic medalist PV Sindhu will spearhead India’s efforts in the women’s singles, while Lakshya Sen, who narrowly missed a bronze medal at the 2024 Paris Olympics, is among the top favorites in men’s singles. Both players are set to commence their campaigns on Wednesday.
Sindhu faced an injury setback last year but returned just in time for the Paris Olympics, where she was eliminated in the Round of 16 by He Bingjiao of China—the same competitor she had defeated for the bronze medal in the 2020 Games.
At the close of the year, Sindhu clinched the 2024 Syed Modi International title by overcoming Wu Luoyu from China in the final. This victory marked her third title at the Syed Modi International, making her one of the most successful players in the tournament’s history.
