Chandigarh, Nov 11 (NationPress) The ruling Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) in Punjab is keen on preserving its seat in a competitive multi-cornered electoral battle. The high-profile polling for the Tarn Taran Assembly bypoll commenced on Tuesday morning under strict security measures. Officials reported a polling rate of 23% in the initial four hours, with voting set to continue until 6 PM. A total of 15 candidates are contesting, with five viewed as leading contenders, creating a vibrant multi-cornered election on this Panthic seat, heavily influenced by Sikh religio-politics.

The Chief Electoral Officer, Sibin C, noted that there are 192,838 registered voters in the area, which comprises 100,933 men, 91,897 women, and eight third-gender voters.

“We have not received any reports of delays in initiating the polling process,” stated an electoral officer to IANS.

Vote counting is scheduled for November 14. This bypoll was prompted by the passing of AAP MLA Kashmir Singh Sohal, who previously secured the seat with 52,935 votes, outperforming SAD's Harmeet Singh Sandhu.

The candidates vying for the seat include Sukhwinder Kaur from SAD, Harjit Singh Sandhu of BJP, Harmeet Singh Sandhu of AAP, and Karanbir Singh from Congress.

According to the Chief Electoral Officer, there are 1,357 service voters, 1,657 voters aged over 85, 306 NRI voters, and 1,488 voters with disabilities. The count of young voters aged between 18 and 19 years is 3,333.

A total of 222 polling stations have been established across 114 locations, including 60 urban and 162 rural stations.

Last week, the Election Commission of India (ECI) ordered the suspension of Tarn Taran Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Ravjot Kaur Grewal for allegedly meddling in the by-election activities. This decision followed a meeting between SAD President Sukhbir Singh Badal and an EC-appointed observer, during which a formal complaint regarding the SSP's misuse of power to favor the ruling party was submitted.

SAD has accused the AAP government of employing state police to sway the by-election process. In their memorandum, they asserted that their party members and supporters from Tarn Taran were “forcibly detained” by police before the bypoll.

The allegations further claim that official resources are being exploited to target Sukhwinder Kaur Randhawa, her family, and SAD supporters.

Point of View

I believe that the Tarn Taran bypoll illustrates the complexities of regional politics in Punjab. The interplay of parties, especially in the Panthic context, emphasizes the need for transparency and fairness in the electoral process. Our commitment remains with the nation, ensuring that every voice is heard.
