How Does Tejasvi Surya Compare the UPA and NDA Eras?
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
New Delhi, Feb 2 (NationPress) BJP MP Tejasvi Surya on Monday highlighted a clear distinction between the President's address during the UPA period and that of the NDA, claiming that the government led by Narendra Modi has implemented the most honest and integrable policies in the last decade.
During the debate on the Motion of Thanks to the President's Address in the Lok Sabha, Surya emphasized that this address signifies an important moment in the nation’s history.
“As we enter the 12th year of the Modi government, the first President's speech to this House arrives at a time when India, despite facing a global economic slowdown, stands as the world’s fastest-growing large economy. This moment comes as we have successfully lifted 24 crore people out of poverty, giving our citizens wings to their aspirations and empowering our youth to become the future torchbearers of this civilization,” he stated.
He further acknowledged the strong political backing the government enjoys, attributing this to what he termed as consistent performance and leadership.
“In these past 12 years, the popularity and political capital of our administration and Prime Minister have consistently risen... This is a testament to the Prime Minister's commitment and success in delivering development, as evidenced by his third consecutive election as Prime Minister with a significant majority,” Surya commented.
Contrasting the UPA era, the BJP MP noted that the current President’s address reflects the extent of change witnessed by the nation in recent years.
He characterized it as a representation of the substantial progress achieved by the country and as a stark reminder of what he termed a lost decade of opportunities compared to the ongoing decade of transformation under PM Modi.
Surya pointed out that one of the most evident differences between the two periods is the lack of corruption references in recent Presidents’ addresses.
“The most significant change over the last decade is that the President’s addresses in the past 10 years do not mention any corruption scandals or scams, illustrating that we have provided the most honest and transparent governance,” he asserted.
To emphasize his argument, Surya recited a section from the President’s address of 2011, which included references to corruption, contrasting it with the narratives of the current administration.
Referring to the President’s comments on India’s economic performance in recent years, Surya again compared it with the UPA period, suggesting that the earlier decade was marked by pessimism.
He noted that during the UPA's 10 years, the economic narrative was focused on “slowdown, inflation, anxiety, youth unemployment, and, most importantly, excuses.”
He acknowledged that the NDA government has faced significant challenges but emphasized a different approach.
“We did not avoid challenges in the past decade. We confronted a once-in-a-century pandemic, yet we did not attribute our domestic economic performance solely to that,” Surya stated.
Additionally, he highlighted the decreasing trend in terrorism and extremism compared to the UPA era.
