Kolkata, July 24 (NationPress) Tension has gripped Dum Dum, situated on the northern outskirts of Kolkata, as of Thursday morning due to a violent confrontation between supporters of Trinamool Congress (TMC) MLA Atin Ghosh and local councillor Kakoli Sen.
The chaos erupted on Wednesday night when supporters of councillor Kakoli Sen allegedly assaulted those backing MLA Atin Ghosh, leading to clashes between the two factions.
Supporters of Ghosh have accused Kakoli Sen of striking an elderly woman during the conflict. Notably, Kakoli Sen is married to former Trinamool Congress Rajya Sabha member Dr. Santanu Sen, who is currently suspended from the party.
In response, Ghosh’s supporters gathered outside the residence of Dr. Santanu Sen and Kakoli Sen to protest. However, both the councillor and her husband were absent from their home at that time.
A significant police presence arrived late Wednesday night to convince Ghosh’s supporters to disperse, which they eventually did.
Nevertheless, the protesters have vowed to escalate their actions if no measures are taken against Sen’s camp, potentially organizing a demonstration outside Sinthi Police Station.
While the immediate tension has eased, a strong police force remains in place to prevent any further unrest.
Meanwhile, Kakoli Sen has lodged a complaint at the local Sinthi Police Station against several individuals, including supporters of Ghosh. “I have formally communicated my concerns to the authorities. Such hooliganism outside our home cannot go on,” stated Santanu Sen, Kakoli’s husband.
In light of these events, MLA Atin Ghosh remarked, “The police must act fairly. Why did Santanu Sen return home with police protection after the protest? We vehemently condemn the assault on our supporters.”
