Synopsis
Key Takeaways
New Delhi, April 11 (NationPress) Member of Parliament Shashi Tharoor reaffirmed the Congress party's unwavering commitment to Women’s Reservation on Saturday, emphasizing the party's dedication to improving women’s access to political roles.
In a statement on X, Tharoor remarked, “I wish to reiterate our firm dedication to Women’s Reservation. On my way in and out, I was approached by a delegation of @MahilaCongress members who expressed optimism that their opportunities would soon be enhanced. I assured them that we support them wholeheartedly!”
Previously, the Congress Working Committee (CWC) convened at Indira Bhawan in New Delhi on Friday evening to discuss its position regarding the proposed amendments to the Women’s Reservation Bill. This meeting occurs amidst a renewed political discourse surrounding the execution and framework of this long-awaited quota legislation.
After the meeting, Tharoor shared a comprehensive post detailing the party’s stance. He noted that the CWC reaffirmed Congress’s enduring support for 33 percent reservation for women, recalling that the party had previously introduced and passed a similar Bill in the Rajya Sabha back in 2013. However, he also voiced concerns regarding the government’s current strategy.
“The CWC criticized the government’s unilateral and non-transparent push for amendments without engaging opposition parties,” Tharoor stated, further expressing that the party had raised concerns over the timing and approach of the proposed modifications. He cautioned that merging the Bill with a delimitation process could significantly disrupt the democratic balance among states, particularly in the South and Northeast regions.
Tharoor also remarked that various Congress leaders during the meeting questioned the government’s motives, suggesting that previous delays in implementation were justified on the basis of the Census, while the current push seems politically motivated ahead of forthcoming elections and the 2029 General Elections.
He stressed that while Congress remains completely committed to one-third reservation for women, the process must be inclusive, transparent, and uphold federal principles. He warned that the amendment should not be exploited as a political tool that diminishes Parliament’s role as a deliberative institution.
The CWC meeting underscored the party’s endeavor to balance support for gender representation with concerns over procedural fairness and constitutional integrity, as the discussion surrounding Women’s Reservation continues to gain momentum in national politics.
In the meantime, the Union Cabinet earlier on Wednesday green-lighted a draft amendment Bill aimed at operationalizing the Women’s Reservation Act ahead of schedule, potentially enabling its implementation for the 2029 General Elections.
This decision was made during a Cabinet meeting led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, as per sources familiar with the matter. The proposed amendment intends to revise the existing framework of the Nari Shakti Vandan Adhiniyam, officially known as the Constitution (106th Amendment) Act, enacted in 2023.
