Kannauj, Oct 14 (NationPress) In the district of Kannauj, Uttar Pradesh, farmers are actively transitioning from conventional crops to the cultivation of roses. This shift is primarily motivated by the promise of enhanced financial returns and aspirations for a brighter future.

This program, supported by the Ministry of Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSME) from the Government of India, has not only boosted the incomes of farmers but has also revitalized the renowned perfume industry of Kannauj.

Additionally, it is fostering the local perfume sector, capitalizing on the district’s favorable soil and climate for rose farming.

Referred to as the ‘perfume capital’, Kannauj boasts soil and climate that are highly suitable for rose cultivation. A significant number of farmers are transitioning from traditional crops such as wheat and paddy to cultivating roses and jasmine flowers. These blossoms are essential in the production of perfumes, attars, and various aromatic products.

Farmers in the area report that rose cultivation yields higher incomes compared to traditional agriculture.

A couple of local farmers shared their personal experiences with IANS, shedding light on their deliberate choice.

Rahul Kushwaha, a farmer from Kannauj, stated, "We have been cultivating roses for a substantial period. Previously, our earnings from traditional crops were modest, but rose farming has nearly doubled our income. The costs are low while the profits are significant. Most importantly, there is year-round market demand for roses."

He elaborated that, with assistance from the central government, farmers receive upfront financial support, which adequately covers expenses related to seeds, irrigation, and maintenance. This initiative provides farmers with the much-needed stability and financial security in their agricultural pursuits.

Many locals believe that rose cultivation has significantly boosted farmers' incomes while also ensuring a consistent supply of raw materials for the perfume industry. This development has generated new employment opportunities and reinforced Kannauj's traditional aromatic heritage.
