Kolkata, June 26 (NationPress) The Trinamool Congress has issued a show-cause notice to Humayun Kabir, the party's legislator representing the Debra Assembly constituency in West Midnapore district, following his unannounced visit to the family of a 13-year-old girl who tragically lost her life in a bomb explosion in Kaliganj, Nadia district earlier this week.
Kabir, a former Indian Police Service (IPS) officer, visited the victim's home on Wednesday evening where he offered monetary assistance to the girl's mother.
He asserted that the funds were not provided by him personally or on behalf of the Trinamool Congress, but rather through a charitable organization with which he is affiliated.
However, the victim's mother declined the monetary offer, firmly stating her refusal to accept any compensation, whether from the state government, the Trinamool Congress, or individuals linked to the ruling party.
She emphasized that her and her husband’s sole objective is to seek justice for their deceased daughter and ensure that those responsible for the tragedy face appropriate consequences.
Confirmation of the notice was made by the party's state Vice President, Jayprakash Majumdar, on Thursday afternoon.
Kabir has been instructed to respond to the show-cause notice within three days.
In a related note, a senior official from the West Bengal Cabinet remarked that Kabir’s unilateral decision to offer assistance without prior notification to the party, and the refusal from the victim's mother, has caused significant embarrassment for the Trinamool Congress.
“It appeared as if he was representing the party to negotiate with the victim's family to avoid further controversy surrounding the incident and to settle it with money. In truth, his actions were a personal choice, and he failed to consult the party leadership before proceeding. Thus, the issuance of a show-cause notice was warranted,” the cabinet member stated.
Since Thursday afternoon, Kabir has been unreachable for comments regarding the situation.
To date, five individuals have been detained in connection with the murder of the minor, Tamanna Khatun.
Local residents and the victim's family have alleged that the girl was killed by shrapnel from a bomb thrown during a victory celebration of the ruling Trinamool Congress following the successful candidacy of Alifa Ahmed in the recent bypolls in Kaliganj, the results of which were announced on Monday.
The victim's mother has accused local police of neglecting the political motivations behind the bomb attack directed at her home, which resulted in her daughter’s death.
She asserted that her residence was specifically targeted due to her family’s long-standing ideological ties with and active involvement in the CPI-M.
Additionally, she raised concerns regarding the number of arrests, questioning the effectiveness of the investigation given that approximately 40 to 50 bombs were thrown in a short time frame, which could not have been executed by merely four individuals.
On Tuesday, the National Commission for Women took notice of the case and sought clarification from Amarnath K, the Krishnanagar District Superintendent of Police, under whose jurisdiction Kaliganj falls.
