Trinamool Congress Faces Turmoil After Candidate Reveal
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Kolkata, March 18 (NationPress) In the wake of the candidate list for the Assembly elections being revealed, internal conflicts within the Trinamool Congress have surfaced across multiple constituencies since Tuesday night.
Infighting ignited in both Khandaghosh and Monteswar Assembly constituencies located in East Burdwan district shortly after the candidate names were disclosed.
In the Khandaghosh area, discontent arose among party members following the selection of Nabina Bag as the party's candidate.
A faction of party leaders and activists has signaled that if the candidate is not changed, numerous Trinamool officials—including the Block President and several Zonal Presidents—will resign from their roles and refrain from participating in the election campaign.
“We will not endorse Nabina Bag as the Trinamool candidate for Khandaghosh,” declared a group of Trinamool leaders who are prepared to step down from their positions.
The disgruntled leaders, extending from the Block President to various Zonal Presidents, accused the party of favoring those who undermine its interests from within.
They asserted that long-time party members who have endured imprisonment and sacrificed their personal lives for the party have been marginalized and overlooked within the organization.
Meanwhile, tensions escalated in the Monteswar constituency right after Siddiqullah Chowdhury was named as the candidate, leading to factional disputes within the Trinamool Congress.
A physical confrontation erupted in Dignagar village between supporters of Siddiqullah Chowdhury and those backing Ahmed Hossain, the President of the Monteswar Panchayat Samiti.
Reports indicate that both sides threw bombs, prompting the deployment of personnel from the Monteswar Police Station and central forces to restore order.
Authorities had to baton charge the crowd to regain control, resulting in one reported injury.
In the Rajganj constituency, the incumbent MLA Khageshwar Roy from Jalpaiguri district resigned from his party position after his name was omitted from the candidate list.
The new candidate for his constituency is Indian athlete Swapna Barman, who had notably secured a gold medal in the 2018 Asiad and joined the Trinamool Congress last month.
Khageshwar expressed his disappointment, stating, “Today, I lost to money! When the Chief Minister departed from Congress to establish her own party, I was there. It’s clear that some leader has influenced this decision with money, leaving out my name. A person who has never contributed to the Trinamool party is now the candidate here. I have resigned due to the injustice I faced. The Rajganj seat will be lost by Trinamool. I laid the groundwork for our team here.”
