Tripura Government Prioritizes Economic Empowerment for Rural Women, Says CM Saha

Agartala, Dec 14 (NationPress) Tripura Chief Minister Manik Saha stated on Saturday that the economic empowerment of rural women and their journey towards self-reliance are among the top priorities for the state government.
During the inauguration of the 19th Regional SARAS Fair-2024, the Chief Minister highlighted that approximately 4.73 lakh rural women, organized into 52,000 Self Help Groups (SHGs) throughout Tripura, have emerged as successful entrepreneurs.
He remarked, "These 4.73 lakh rural women have not only managed their livelihoods proficiently, but also make significant contributions to the state’s rural economy."
Furthermore, the Chief Minister mentioned that various banks have disbursed Rs 1,414 crore in loans to SHGs aimed at enhancing their business operations and boosting quality production.
In line with Prime Minister Narendra Modi's 'Vocal for Local' initiative, Saha pointed out that earlier this year, Matabari ‘Peda’, a milk-based delicacy, and the traditional tribal attire 'Risha' received the prestigious Geographical Indication (GI) registration, also known as the GI tag.
He stated, "The acquisition of GI tags for these two significant products from Tripura underscores the talents of our artisans and craftspeople. The SARAS Fair serves not only as a platform for selling rural products, but also for showcasing the skills, entrepreneurial spirit, and potential of the rural populace."
To ensure comprehensive protection for SHG members, they are included in various insurance schemes, including the Pradhan Mantri Jeevan Jyoti Bima Yojana.
"The interactions throughout the 13-day fair among experts, artisans, SHG members, and other stakeholders will further enhance the quality of products produced by our rural communities," the Chief Minister noted.
Saha added that the state government has allocated Rs 70 crore as a revolving fund for the SHGs and an additional Rs 626 crore for community investments to bolster self-reliance among rural residents.
He highlighted that during the SARAS Fair in 2022-23, products worth over Rs 1.5 crore were sold, and in 2023-24, sales exceeded Rs 4.5 crore.
The Tripura Rural Livelihood Mission (TRLM), part of the Rural Development Department, organized the Regional SARAS Fair-2024, featuring more than 400 stalls showcasing various products made by rural communities.
