Agartala, Jan 12 (NationPress) The Agriculture and Farmers' Welfare Minister of Tripura, Ratan Lal Nath, on Monday, commenced the shipment of 15,000 scented lemons from the Agartala Railway Station to Kolkata, signifying yet another achievement in the state's burgeoning organic farming landscape.
During the event, the Minister highlighted that while Tripura's scented lemons have been previously exported, this shipment was organized through the Tripura State Organic Farming Development Agency in partnership with the Baramura Organic Produces Company Limited.
Minister Nath reported that the lemons were grown by approximately 80 farmers across nearly 100 hectares in the South Hadrai and Hawaibari regions of Khowai district.
This initiative was spearheaded by Sourav Gupta, a resident of Agartala, in alignment with the 'Prabashi Tripura' initiative launched recently under the direction of Chief Minister Manik Saha.
“Our farmers are our 'Annadata' (providers of food) and deserve utmost regard. Agriculture is fundamental to India, and Prime Minister Narendra Modi has persistently stressed the importance of reinforcing this sector by providing essential support to farmers. Agriculture remains our top priority,” stated the Minister, also mentioning that the produce would be sold in Kolkata.
Additionally, Minister Nath announced that another shipment of 15,000 scented lemons is planned for export in the near future.
He emphasized the progress in organic farming within the state, noting that the area dedicated to organic cultivation has surged from about 2,000 hectares before 2018 to over 20,000 hectares today.
“Our primary goal is to enhance farmers' income. The state government is committed to aiding farmers by ensuring they have market access and receive fair pricing through Farmer Producer Companies (FPCs),” he added.
In attendance at the event were Tripura Assembly Treasury bench Chief Whip Kalyani Saha Roy, Agriculture Secretary Apurba Roy, along with other senior officials.
Minister Nath also noted that in the past seven years (2018 to 2025), the Horticulture Department has successfully exported 73.15 metric tonnes (MT) of pineapple to Dubai, Oman, and Qatar.
“Moreover, we exported 4.40 MT of jackfruit to the US, and 30 MT of ginger and 17 MT of betel leaves to Bangladesh during the same timeframe,” he added.
