Agartala, Dec 18 (NationPress) As groundwater levels in Tripura continue to remain stable, the Bharatiya Janata Party-led state government has launched several initiatives aimed at enhancing rainwater conservation and securing a sustainable water supply in the years ahead, stated State Agriculture and Farmers' Welfare Minister Ratan Lal Nath on Thursday.
The Minister presided over a crucial executive committee meeting regarding the Watershed Development Project under the Pradhan Mantri Krishi Sinchayee Yojana held at Pragna Bhavan here.
He emphasized that states reliant on rainwater need to strategize for the future, which is precisely why this scheme has been introduced.
"Our initiative focuses on storing rainwater as it permeates the soil. Consequently, we are constructing watersheds, check dams, ponds, and engaging in plantations. We have invested significantly and are nearing our goals. Phase 3.0 will commence after March," the Minister detailed.
He noted that states like Haryana, Punjab, and Rajasthan do not rely on rainwater; instead, they utilize groundwater for various needs.
"Nonetheless, they are now encountering a water crisis due to declining groundwater levels," the Minister remarked.
Minister Nath pointed out, "Tripura is in a favorable position, with only 9.7% of groundwater being utilized in the state, whereas Assam uses 15% and West Bengal uses 52%. However, we need to consider future generations. This Watershed Development Project under the Pradhan Mantri Krishi Sinchayee Yojana is a step in that direction."
During this executive meeting, strategies were discussed for improving rainwater storage and promoting self-reliance among citizens. The Agriculture Minister urged officials to utilize the remaining funds by January 15, 2026, to secure additional funding for the state's development in future projects.
Chief Minister Manik Saha confirmed the attendance of Zilla Sabhadhipatis from all eight Zilla Parishads during the meeting.
Additionally, Minister Nath mentioned that the state government is considering the creation of water bodies alongside national highways, along with enhancing road connectivity, establishing children's parks, open gyms, and conducting plantation drives.
