Washington, Sep 2 (NationPress) John Bolton, who served as the former National Security Advisor under Trump, has criticized the current administration’s approach to India, claiming that Trump is effectively “shredding” years of diplomatic efforts aimed at bolstering relations with New Delhi. Bolton stated, “In recent weeks, Donald Trump has essentially overturned that, sending India back towards Russia and strengthening its ties with China, thus dismantling decades of efforts to shift that alignment,” during an interview with Sky News on Monday.

He pointed out that prior to Trump’s presidency, the US was working diligently to “wean India away from its Cold War ties to the Soviet Union and China.”

According to Bolton, “The West, particularly the US, has spent years trying to pull India away from its Cold War connections with the Soviet Union and Russia,” which included purchasing advanced weaponry from them while warning India about the threats posed by China, exemplified by the Asian Security Quad comprising Japan, India, Australia, and the United States.

Bolton also recalled several actions taken by the Trump administration that “have offended the Indians,” notably the abrupt halt of trade negotiations. “The Indians believed they were on the verge of a resolution, similar to what Britain achieved with Trump, but he disregarded it and imposed a 25% tariff. He hit India with another 25%. Meanwhile, he did not impose tariffs on Russia or China, who are major purchasers of Russian oil and gas,” Bolton elaborated.

He mentioned that Trump’s efforts to claim “full credit” for the India-Pakistan conflict in May exacerbated the situation. “When tensions rose recently between Pakistan and India following a terrorist attack in Kashmir, Trump took credit for de-escalation as one of the wars he resolved this year, which infuriated India,” he noted.

On Monday, Trump intensified his criticism of India’s trade practices, labeling the economic relationship as a “one-sided disaster.”

Currently, Bolton is under scrutiny from the Trump administration, with federal agents conducting a raid on his residence and offices last week, reportedly linked to accusations of possessing classified documents.
