New Delhi, June 15 (NationPress) NCP(SP) leader Jayant Patil has expressed profound concern regarding the alarming frequency of helicopter accidents in Uttarakhand, particularly in the Kedarnath area, following the recent catastrophic event that resulted in numerous fatalities, including two individuals from Maharashtra.
He described this as a critical issue, urging the government to promptly reassess and enhance helicopter safety measures in the region.
"This is an extremely serious issue. Such occurrences keep happening repeatedly, and I cannot comprehend why the authorities are not reinforcing the safety regulations," stated Patil.
"I estimate that in the past two years, there have been approximately five significant accidents, leading to substantial loss of life, yet the helicopter operations persist in that area," he remarked.
The helicopter crash occurred at around 5:20 a.m. in the densely wooded region between Gaurikund and Sonprayag, specifically in the remote location of Gauri Mai Khark.
Upon receiving news of the incident, rescue teams were swiftly dispatched under the leadership of SDRF commander Arpan Yaduvanshi.
In the meantime, Swami Sadanand Saraswati Maharaj commented, "A tragic event has transpired once again. We must glean lessons from such incidents. Historically, our ancestors journeyed to these sacred sites on foot. Nowadays, despite better amenities, we depend on modern conveniences for spiritual journeys, which is beneficial, but there is a pressing need for vigilance and safety..."
A team from the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) arrived at the crash site and retrieved all seven charred bodies.
The National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and local police also participated in the rescue efforts.
All seven individuals aboard the helicopter, which was traveling from Kedarnath Dham to Guptkashi, lost their lives when the chopper crashed and ignited in a forested area near Gaurikund.
Among the victims was a 23-month-old child.
The ill-fated aircraft, a Bell 407 with registration VT-BKA, operated by Aryan Aviation, was flying the route 'Shri Kedarnath ji - Aryan Helipad, Guptkashi' when it crashed during its brief 10-minute journey.
