Synopsis
Key Takeaways
United Nations, April 2 (NationPress) - The UN Security Council will prioritize the conflicts in West Asia throughout April, addressing critical issues related to Iran, Lebanon, Gaza, and the West Bank. This was announced by Jamal Fares Alrowaiei, Bahrain's permanent representative to the UN and the Council's president for the month.
During a routine briefing regarding the Security Council's agenda for April, Alrowaiei detailed four primary objectives guiding Bahrain’s role in the Council. These include fostering peace and stability, tackling both traditional and emerging security threats, promoting inclusion and participation, and enhancing multilateralism.
According to Alrowaiei, these priorities will be reflected in the Council's work program and will influence discussions throughout the month.
The focus will also encompass the prevailing regional and international landscape, particularly issues surrounding Iran, Palestine, Lebanon, and others.
Additionally, the UN Security Council expressed its condemnation of the recent incidents that resulted in the deaths of three Indonesian peacekeepers from the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) during the past weekend, as reported by Xinhua news agency.
In a public statement, members of the Security Council reiterated their unwavering support for UNIFIL and urged all involved parties to guarantee the safety and security of its personnel and facilities, along with the mission’s freedom of movement, in accordance with international law. They also called on all parties to avoid actions that could jeopardize the safety of peacekeepers.
Emphasizing that peacekeepers should never be targeted, the Council called for a thorough investigation into these incidents via UNIFIL, ensuring that the troop-contributing country remains updated on progress, in line with the objectives of Security Council resolutions 2518 (2020) and 2589 (2021).
Moreover, they urged all parties to fully comply with Security Council resolution 1701 (2006) and reaffirmed their strong commitment to Lebanon’s sovereignty, independence, territorial integrity, and unity.
In addition, five other peacekeepers sustained injuries during the incidents over the weekend. Recent weeks have seen multiple occurrences impacting UNIFIL positions and injuring peacekeepers, set against the backdrop of ongoing hostilities along the Blue Line, as noted in the statement.
