Key Takeaways
New Delhi, Feb 11 (NationPress) Anil Rajput, the Chairman of FICCI CASCADE, one of India’s premier industry organizations, asserted on Wednesday that the United Nations ought to declare February 11 as 'International Anti-Smuggling Day' to enhance global awareness regarding the issue of smuggling.
During a discussion with IANS at an event, Rajput highlighted the escalating problem of smuggling both nationally and internationally.
“We call upon the United Nations to officially recognize February 11 as 'International Anti-Smuggling Day' to elevate consciousness about smuggling around the world and to inspire nations to unite in voicing their concerns against this pressing issue,” he stated.
At the gathering in the national capital, specialists pointed out that India has entered into 42 mutual customs cooperation agreements and is currently negotiating an additional 21 with key trading partners, thereby significantly bolstering the nation’s international enforcement framework against smuggling.
Mohan Kumar Singh, a member of the Central Board of Indirect Taxes and Customs (CBIC), emphasized that enforcement strategies should transition from being incident-focused to targeting networks for disruption.
He elaborated that enforcement must concentrate on dismantling networks that facilitate financial flows, logistics, and international connections that sustain illegal operations.
Singh remarked that smuggling has transformed into a sophisticated, technology-driven economic offense that adversely impacts national security and economic integrity.
Referring to recent announcements in the Union Budget, Singh noted that advancements like AI-powered image analytics and enhanced container scanning at major ports will further fortify enforcement capabilities. Additionally, GST simplification and customs reforms are set to promote compliance while minimizing incentives for illicit trade.
He showcased the robust enforcement outcomes from the first three quarters of the current fiscal year, highlighting the seizure of around 500 kg of gold, approximately 150 million illicit cigarette sticks, over 20 metric tons of red sanders, and roughly 120 kg of cocaine.
Moreover, seizures included around 50 kg of heroin, approximately 350 kg of amphetamines, and about 3,700 kg of hydroponic cannabis at various airports, as per the statement.
