Union Territory of J&K Implements Comprehensive Strategy Against Drug Trafficking: L-G

Jammu, January 12 (NationPress) Jammu and Kashmir's Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha participated virtually from Jammu in a regional conference focused on 'Drug Trafficking and National Security', organized by the Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) in Delhi, under the chairmanship of Home Minister Amit Shah, according to an official announcement made on Saturday.
The L-G highlighted the Union Territory's dedication to dismantling the narco-terror connection and addressing the drug crisis.
During his speech, the Lt Governor stated that concerted measures were implemented in 2024 to target the illicit profits from narcotics trafficking, identifying 188 properties belonging to traffickers for attachment under the Smugglers and Foreign Exchange Manipulators Act (SAFEMA).
More than 250 repeat offenders were detained under the PIT-NDPS Act.
The Lt Governor noted that in 2024, there were significant improvements compared to previous years, with 210 convictions achieved, marking the highest tally to date.
In the same year, approximately 1,514 cases were registered under the NDPS Act, resulting in 2,260 arrests.
He affirmed the government's commitment to thoroughly dismantling the entire drug syndicate, which poses a serious threat to the nation's sovereignty and security.
Five special NDPS Courts have been established to expedite the trial process for these cases.
“Financial investigations are now being conducted in all cases to trace both forward and backward linkages, ensuring that the entire network is neutralized in every NDPS case,” asserted the Lt Governor.
He further stated that, under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah, the Union Territory has embraced a whole of government approach to tackle drug trafficking and substance abuse.
The Lt Governor mentioned that inter-departmental coordination regarding various challenges is upheld, with regular NCORD meetings conducted over the past two years.
He noted that forensic labs have been enhanced, and modern equipment along with manpower has been secured.
This progress has led to the effective operation of labs and the fortification of the entire legal justice framework, enabling the prompt filing of charge sheets and efficient trials of cases.
