New York, July 18 (NationPress) In a significant diplomatic achievement for India, the United States has officially classified The Resistance Front (TRF) as a global terrorist organization, acting upon President Donald Trump’s call for accountability regarding the Pahalgam attack.

During the announcement, Secretary of State Marco Rubio stated on Thursday that this decision “illustrates the Trump Administration’s dedication to safeguarding our national security interests, combating terrorism, and fulfilling President Trump’s demand for justice concerning the Pahalgam attack.”

He confirmed the TRF’s addition to the lists of designated Foreign Terrorist Organizations (FTO) and Specially Designated Global Terrorists (SDGT).

According to his statement, “TRF, which operates as a front for Lashkar-e-Tayyiba (LeT), claimed responsibility for the devastating April 22, 2025, Pahalgam attack, resulting in the deaths of 26 civilians.”

“This marked the most lethal assault on civilians in India since the 2008 Mumbai attacks orchestrated by LeT,” he added.

Following the attack, Trump promptly condemned the act and communicated with Prime Minister Narendra Modi, expressing his unwavering support to India in bringing the perpetrators of this atrocious act to justice, as reported by the External Affairs Ministry.

External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar highlighted the TRF attack during discussions with Rubio and at the recent gathering of Quad foreign ministers in Washington.

The LeT, for which TRF acts as a proxy, is based in Pakistan and is believed to receive state support.

Last month, an all-party parliamentary delegation led by Congress Party leader Sashi Tharoor met with US lawmakers and officials to inform them about the TRF's actions.

In response to the April attack, India initiated Operation Sindoor, targeting LeT installations in Pakistan.

Rubio also noted that “TRF has taken responsibility for numerous assaults on Indian security personnel, including one of the latest incidents in 2024.”

In October of the previous year, the TRF killed six laborers working on a tunnel near Sonamarg and a doctor, with the assailants also injuring five individuals during the attack.

The US has expressed concern regarding the activities of both LeT and its affiliate TRF, particularly considering that during the 2008 Mumbai attacks, six Americans were among the approximately 170 victims.

The SDGT classification for TRF aims to restrict the group’s assets and impede their financial operations.

The FTO designation enforces travel limitations on the terror group and its members, alongside asset freezing measures.

Point of View

The designation of TRF as a terrorist organization by the US reinforces India's persistent efforts against terrorism and highlights the international community's acknowledgment of the threats posed by such groups. As a nation, India continues to stand firm against extremism and seeks justice for its citizens, fostering diplomatic relations that prioritize security and stability.
