Washington, Sep 24 (NationPress) US Energy Secretary Chris Wright on Wednesday commended New Delhi as an “incredible ally” and expressed his admiration for India, advocating for enhanced energy collaboration between the two nations.
During a press briefing in New York, Wright acknowledged India’s status as a “dynamic society” characterized by a “rapidly increasing energy demand”.
“A substantial part of my early tenure involved engaging with India, the world’s largest democracy, an incredible ally of the United States, a swiftly advancing economy, and a truly dynamic society that is experiencing an increase in energy demand due to rising prosperity and opportunities. I am a major supporter of India. We cherish our relationship with India,” he remarked.
This statement coincides with Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal’s remarks on Tuesday, where he also advocated for the expansion of India-US energy trade.
At an event focused on Energy Security in New York, Goyal discussed the potential for increased India-US energy commerce and collaboration in nuclear energy as a viable clean energy alternative, alongside fostering start-ups in the renewable sector.
Wright acknowledged the “friction” between both countries regarding India’s acquisition of Russian oil, noting that US President Donald Trump is leveraging his influence to seek peace in Ukraine.
“We wish to conclude that conflict. I believe the Indian side shares the same aspiration,” he stated.
Wright emphasized that the United States is eager to “broaden our energy collaboration” with India.
“We aim to expand our energy collaboration with India in sectors such as natural gas, coal, nuclear energy, and clean cooking fuels, including liquid petroleum gas. India has excelled in this domain. Hence, we seek nothing more than increased energy trade cooperation with India,” he highlighted.
On Tuesday, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio indicated that the Trump administration might be inclined to “adjust” the additional 25 percent tariffs imposed on India concerning its purchases of Russian oil.
In a discussion with NBC News, Rubio elaborated on US efforts to conclude the conflict in Ukraine and expressed hope that the additional tariffs on India could be amended.
“We have already witnessed the measures imposed on India, although we aspire to rectify this situation,” he mentioned.
Rubio also criticized European nations for not “doing enough”.
In another interview with ABC News, Rubio referred to India as a “very close partner” of the United States.
“We’ve enacted additional tariffs on India – a very close ally of ours – and we had discussions with them again yesterday, which pertained to their procurement of Russian oil,” Rubio added.
External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar, who is present in New York for the UN General Assembly, met with Secretary of State Marco Rubio on Monday.
Following their discussions, Rubio stated that India holds “critical” importance for the United States and welcomed ongoing trade discussions.
Jaishankar also shared on X, “Our dialogue encompassed a variety of bilateral and international matters of current relevance. We concurred on the necessity of sustained engagement to advance priority areas.”
