Moscow, April 13 (NationPress) Russian presidential spokesperson Dmitry Peskov acknowledged on Monday that the US blockade of the Strait of Hormuz is expected to have a detrimental effect on global markets.

"It is highly probable that such actions will continue to adversely affect international markets; this assessment can be made with considerable confidence," the Kremlin representative stated during a routine press briefing in Moscow, as reported by Russia's prominent Tass news agency.

When asked about further details, he expressed that information regarding the US blockade of the Strait of Hormuz remains ambiguous.

"Many aspects remain unclear and puzzling, so I would prefer to withhold any substantial commentary at this point," Peskov remarked concerning the US's threats regarding the strait.

On Sunday, the United States announced its intention to initiate a comprehensive maritime blockade on vessels navigating to or from Iranian ports, starting April 13, heightening tensions after inconclusive negotiations between Washington and Tehran over critical issues, including Iran's nuclear program.

This action, disclosed by the US Central Command (CENTCOM), follows a presidential directive and aims to target all maritime traffic linked to Iranian ports, including those in the Arabian Gulf and Gulf of Oman.

According to CENTCOM, “the blockade will be applied uniformly against ships from all nations,” clarifying that US forces will not obstruct vessels transiting the Strait of Hormuz to and from non-Iranian ports. This blockade is set to commence at 7:30 PM IST on Monday, as per a CENTCOM announcement.

In the meantime, Moscow confirmed that Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov is scheduled to visit Beijing for a two-day visit beginning Tuesday.

"On April 14-15, Foreign Minister Lavrov will conduct an official visit to the People's Republic of China, where he will engage in discussions with Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi," the Russian Foreign Ministry declared on Monday.

"The foreign ministers of the two countries will explore a broad spectrum of topics regarding bilateral cooperation, potential contacts at various levels, and international collaboration, particularly focusing on joint efforts within the UN, BRICS, SCO, G20, APEC, and other multilateral platforms. A thorough exchange of perspectives is anticipated on several pressing topics and regional matters, including the Ukrainian crisis and the status in the Middle East," it continued.

Point of View
