Uttam Nagar Remains Tense After Holi Violence; Five Arrested Amid Heavy Security
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
New Delhi, March 7 (NationPress) Tension persisted on Saturday in Uttam Nagar’s JJ Colony in West Delhi following a tragic occurrence during Holi festivities that resulted in the death of a young man. The atmosphere remains tense, prompting a significant presence of security personnel to uphold law and order.
In the alley adjacent to the crime scene, where some relatives of the alleged perpetrators lived, a furious crowd vandalized personal belongings and damaged a scooter. Following the incident, it is reported that the relatives of the accused fled the area in fear.
Police quickly intervened to disperse the crowd and prevent further escalation. Despite ongoing patrols and a substantial security force presence, tensions linger in the neighborhood.
The Additional Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) for Dwarka, Niharika Bhatt, visited the grieving family in JJ Colony on Saturday to evaluate the situation and review security measures.
She stated to reporters that comprehensive security protocols have been implemented to avert any further disturbances. The entire locality is now under a strict security framework, with double barricades established to control movement.
Approximately 400 to 500 personnel from the Delhi Police and other security forces have been stationed in the area to maintain peace and prevent any recurrence of the prior violence.
The Additional DCP confirmed the arrest of five individuals connected to the incident, with investigations ongoing to ensure justice is served.
She also emphasized that there was no physical force used by police during the protests, stating, "There was no lathi charge. It would be incorrect to claim there was one. We have adequate police presence and are working to restore normalcy here," she explained.
Additionally, she refuted claims that relatives of the accused were being barred from entering the area.
Meanwhile, Delhi Health Minister Pankaj Singh also visited the locality to meet the family of the deceased youth. "This incident is condemnable. I have come here to express my condolences to the family members and assure them that the Delhi Police will take strict action," Singh remarked to the press.
According to police accounts, the conflict began during Holi when colored water from a balloon unintentionally splashed onto a woman from another family. The balloon was reportedly thrown by an 11-year-old girl playing Holi on the terrace with relatives.
The balloon burst on the street, splashing the woman and igniting an argument between the two families. The dispute quickly escalated into violence.
The victim, identified as Tarun, was allegedly assaulted by a group while returning home after celebrating Holi with friends. He suffered severe injuries during the attack and succumbed to his injuries while receiving treatment at a hospital on March 5.
Family members of the victim claimed that Tarun was violently attacked, including being struck with a large stone while he lay injured on the street.
On March 6, hundreds of individuals gathered outside the Uttam Nagar Police Station demanding severe action against the accused. Police reported the presence of around 500 protesters, with nearly 200 to 300 officers deployed to maintain order.
Increased security measures have been implemented in the area, with access to inner lanes restricted to prevent any further incidents.
Additionally, police reported that during the protests on Thursday evening, members of the Bajrang Dal allegedly removed personal items from the accused's home and set a scooter ablaze. Officers on-site quickly extinguished the fire and restored order.
Previously, Bajrang Dal had issued a 24-hour ultimatum to law enforcement, demanding decisive action against those involved in the incident. Following the deadline, a large number of supporters gathered outside the police station to protest.
Police confirmed the arrest of four individuals, including Kamruddin and Mushtaq, while one minor has been detained. Efforts are ongoing to identify and apprehend additional suspects linked to the attack.
Authorities stated that while the situation remains tense, it is under control with a robust presence of the Delhi Police and the Rapid Action Force (RAF) in the narrow lanes where the incident occurred.
