Ahmedabad, June 16 (NationPress) The government of Gujarat has announced a state mourning period on Monday to pay tribute to former Chief Minister Vijay Rupani, whose mortal remains have been confirmed through a DNA test. His final rites will take place in Rajkot.
His remains will soon be returned to his family.
The last ceremonies will occur in Rajkot at 5:00 p.m., conducted with full state honors. Following the DNA confirmation, Rupani’s family is traveling from Gandhinagar to Rajkot.
His body will be brought to his home in Prakash Society, where provisions for public viewing have been established.
Union Minister Parshottam Rupala visited the Rupani family in Gandhinagar on Sunday evening to express his condolences.
Gujarat’s Home Minister Harsh Sanghavi verified the identification via a post on X, announcing that Vijay Rupani’s DNA sample matched at 11:10 a.m. on Sunday, confirming his death in the tragic crash.
The remains are being transported to Rajkot for the funeral service. Dr. Rajnish Patel, Medical Superintendent of Ahmedabad Civil Hospital, provided updates to the media. “Of the remains brought to the Civil Hospital from the crash site, 92 DNA matches have been confirmed. However, due to sample duplications, the actual count of distinct individuals stands at 87. So far, 47 bodies have been returned to their families,” he stated.
Search efforts continue at the crash site, which has been cordoned off for an investigation by the Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau (AAIB). Recovery teams have recently retrieved the second black box from the cockpit, which may yield critical information regarding the crash's cause.
The death toll from the devastating Air India plane crash on June 12 in Ahmedabad has tragically risen to 270, which includes fatalities on the ground.
Rupani was a passenger on Air India flight 171, a Boeing Dreamliner 787-8, that crashed mere seconds after takeoff on June 12. The flight was carrying 242 passengers and crew members heading to London from Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport. All aboard, except for a British national, Vishwash Kumar Ramesh, perished when the plane collided with a hostel building belonging to BJ Medical College.
