Can the Memories of Vilasrao Deshmukh Ever Fade Away?
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Mumbai, Jan 6 (NationPress) Amidst the ongoing controversy surrounding Maharashtra BJP president Ravindra Chavan's assertion that the memories of former chief minister Vilasrao Deshmukh would be erased from Latur, Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis remarked on Tuesday that Vilasrao Deshmukh is held in high esteem by everyone in Maharashtra.
“Hence, no one can or will erase his memories. Ravindra Chavan has already clarified his comments and expressed regret, stating that he was merely referring to electoral records,” Fadnavis elaborated.
Moreover, the Chief Minister noted, "Despite our political disagreements with the Congress, we recognize that Vilasrao Deshmukh was a significant leader who contributed positively to Maharashtra. Typically, individuals do not express regret during elections, yet Chavan did so since his words were misinterpreted."
This statement follows backlash from both the opposition and members of Vilasrao Deshmukh's family, who criticized Ravindra Chavan. During a speech to party workers, Chavan had mentioned, "The memories of Vilasrao will be erased." Chavan later issued an apology.
While campaigning in Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar, Chavan addressed the media regarding his statements. He clarified that municipal elections focus on which party can provide civic services more effectively. “I did not personally criticize Vilasrao Deshmukh. Even today, the Congress seeks votes in his name. We are requesting votes based on the achievements under PM Narendra Modi’s guidance and the initiatives of the Mahayuti government. If my comments have offended anyone, I sincerely apologize,” remarked Chavan.
However, opposition parties accused the BJP of showing disrespect towards one of Maharashtra's most esteemed leaders. Former CM Vilasrao Deshmukh’s son and Congress MLA Amit Deshmukh referred to the remarks as “extremely unfortunate and distressing,” blaming the BJP for “ideological bankruptcy” and dishonoring a leader who dedicated decades of service to the state.
His brother, actor Riteish Deshmukh, responded sharply yet thoughtfully, asserting that his father's legacy is “engraved in the hearts” of the people and cannot be diminished by mere words.
State Congress general secretary Sachin Sawant criticized Ravindra Chavan, stating, “Such hatred and contempt! Even 13 years after Vilasrao's passing, the BJP wishes for his memories to be obliterated? Vilasrao's legacy is not just confined to Latur but resides in the hearts of the entire population of Maharashtra. It can never be erased.”
