Synopsis
Key Takeaways
New Delhi, March 14 (NationPress) On Saturday, Bhupender Yadav, the Minister for Environment, Forest and Climate Change, praised the identification of two new species of Lichen moths by Indian lepidopterists.
In a post on social media titled ‘A significant achievement in Indian taxonomy!’, Yadav remarked, “In an extraordinary advancement, the Zoological Survey of India has revealed the discovery of two new Lichen moth species.”
“The identification of Caulocera Hollowayi and Asura Buxa represents a crucial contribution to the cataloging of India’s moth biodiversity. Investigating evolutionarily significant and lesser-known groups such as Lepidoptera is vital for comprehending ecosystem functionality and monitoring air pollution indicators in the Indian Himalayas,” Yadav noted.
He emphasized that this achievement highlights the need for ongoing taxonomic research in biodiversity hotspots like the Himalayas.
Additionally, Yadav announced that on Friday, Project Great Indian Bustard (GIB) celebrated its fourth year of captive breeding with the hatching of two new chicks at the Conservation Breeding Centre in Rajasthan, raising the total number of birds in captivity to 70.
Under the environmentally-conscious guidance of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Yadav stated that the country is progressing well towards making this project a resounding success.
In a post shared on X, Yadav referred to this as another notable accomplishment under Project GIB.
The Minister explained that the two chicks hatched at the Conservation Breeding Centre in Rajasthan this week—one through natural mating and the other via artificial insemination.
Describing it as a significant milestone for conservation initiatives, Yadav indicated that some of this year's captive-bred chicks will be softly released into the wild, marking a new and challenging phase for the project.
He extended his congratulations to the Rajasthan Forest Department officials for their achievement.
Earlier, Yadav highlighted the importance of the balanced and sustainable use of our natural resources.
He remarked that ancient Indian traditions have long encouraged society to live in harmony with nature.
He warned that unchecked exploitation of natural resources could create serious ecological imbalances.
Yadav also pointed out that India has consistently raised this issue on a global stage and continues to play a proactive role in promoting environmental responsibility.
Furthermore, the Minister noted that over recent years, the Indian Institute of Forest Management has exhibited exceptional performance, with its students achieving outstanding placement opportunities.
