Is Yemen's STC Truly Ready for a 2-Year Transitional Phase Before Referendum?
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Aden, Jan 3 (NationPress) The leader of Yemen's Southern Transitional Council (STC), Aidarous Al-Zubaidi, declared on Friday the initiation of a two-year transitional phase during which the council will govern the southern regions of Yemen, ultimately leading to a referendum on southern independence.
In a broadcast speech via the STC-aligned AIC channel, Al-Zubaidi asserted that this decision stemmed from what he termed a popular mandate and recent advancements in security and governance within the area, according to reports from Xinhua news agency.
"The two-year transitional phase will culminate in a constitutional declaration aimed at reinstating the State of South Yemen," Al-Zubaidi remarked, indicating that the declaration is set to take effect on January 2, 2028.
Following this transitional period, a popular referendum on self-determination will be held, utilizing peaceful and transparent methods that align with internationally accepted standards, he added.
However, the constitutional declaration could be activated earlier if the STC's appeals are ignored, or if the people, territory, or forces of southern Yemen face any military aggression, he warned, emphasizing that "all options remain viable."
The Saudi-backed Yemeni government has yet to respond to the STC's proclamation.
This announcement arrives amidst intense clashes between STC-aligned forces and Yemeni government troops vying for control over military installations and state assets in the oil-rich southeastern province of Hadramout.
Recent hours have seen escalating combat as both factions aim to extend their dominance in this strategically significant area, as indicated by local sources.
Reports from local media and military personnel noted that Saudi warplanes intensified airstrikes on various sites in Hadramout earlier today, including Seiyun Airport and its vicinity, resulting in casualties.
Since 2014, Yemen has been engulfed in conflict, following the Houthi forces' takeover of Sanaa and extensive northern territories, prompting a Saudi-led coalition's intervention in 2015.
Established in 2017, the UAE-sponsored STC advocates for self-determination and eventual independence for southern Yemen. Despite joining the Saudi-led coalition and becoming part of Yemen's Presidential Leadership Council in 2022, the group continues to pursue southern sovereignty, leading to ongoing disputes over power distribution and resource management.
