Kottayam, Dec 26 (NationPress) In a remarkable event on Friday, Palai, located in the Kottayam district of Kerala, made headlines when 21-year-old Diya Binu Pulikkakandam took office as Chairperson of the Palai Municipality. This milestone not only makes her the youngest municipal chairperson in India but also adds a significant chapter to the country's local governance narrative.

Diya's rise to leadership comes after a period of intense political negotiations within a fragmented municipal council, symbolizing a generational shift in this historic town.

Diya is the daughter of Binu Pulikkakandam, a former municipal chairperson, and the niece of councillor Biju Pulikkakandam, both of whom have been influential figures in Palai's political arena.

Importantly, all three members of the Pulikkakandam family triumphed as independent candidates in the recent municipal elections, with Diya's victory being seen as a political reclamation for the family.

In 2023, her father, Binu Pulikkakandam, faced removal from the chairperson's position by Jose K. Mani of the Kerala Congress (M), which sparked considerable discontent among their supporters.

Now, two years later, the chairperson's role returns to the family but through the next generation, marking what many see as a quiet yet powerful resurgence.

Initially, their decision to field three independent candidates faced harsh criticism.

However, the election results turned the narrative in their favor decisively.

Diya, a BA Economics graduate from Madras Christian College, entered politics at her father's encouragement and embraced the challenge with enthusiasm.

Her campaign, characterized by clarity of vision and quiet confidence, resonated with the electorate in Ward 15, where she secured victory by a margin of 131 votes.

In a council where no political faction achieved a clear majority, post-election negotiations became necessary.

During these discussions, the Pulikkakandam family's condition for support was Diya's election as chairperson, a request ultimately accepted by the Congress-led United Democratic Front (UDF).

Diya now leads a municipal council that includes her father and uncle as councillors—a unique but constitutionally sound arrangement that has sparked both debate and admiration.

She has expressed her intention to pursue further education while fulfilling her duties as chairperson.

Politically, her rise also signifies a setback for Jose K. Mani, whose party is the third-largest ally within the ruling Left Democratic Front.

Jose's father, the late K.M. Mani, held the Palai Assembly seat from 1967 until his passing in 2019.

After Jose aligned with the Left prior to the 2020 local elections, he lost the Palai Assembly seat in 2021, and now the municipality—once viewed as a Mani stronghold—has slipped through his fingers.

The message from Palai is clear: the electorate is placing its trust in youth.
