PMAY-U 2.0: 38,000 families enter new homes in Madhya Pradesh, ₹1,050 crore sanctioned
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Over 38,000 families across Madhya Pradesh performed Grih Pravesh ceremonies in their newly completed homes on 21 June 2025, as the state marked a significant milestone under the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana-Urban (PMAY-U) 2.0 scheme. Simultaneously, more than 42,000 additional beneficiaries received sanction letters for government housing assistance worth ₹1,050 crore, bringing the total number of families benefited in a single event to over 80,000.
Key Developments at the Sanwer Event
The landmark programme was held at Sanwer in Indore district, where Union Housing and Urban Affairs Minister Manohar Lal presided over the event alongside Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Mohan Yadav. State Urban Development and Housing Minister Kailash Vijayvargiya, Minister of State for Urban Administration and Development Pratima Bagri, and other state ministers were also present.
Sanction letters distributed at the event will enable eligible households to access financial assistance for constructing or acquiring pucca houses. The 38,000 Grih Pravesh ceremonies, held simultaneously across various districts of the state, underscored the pace of housing completions under the scheme.
What the Government Said
Addressing beneficiaries at the event, Manohar Lal said every new house 'represents dignity, security and hope for families.' He reaffirmed the Centre's commitment to the Housing for All mission under Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
The minister emphasised that access to permanent housing improves not only living conditions but also connectivity to essential services and livelihood opportunities. He also highlighted a key social provision of the scheme: housing units must be registered in the name of the woman of the household or through joint ownership, a mandate designed to strengthen women's property rights and financial security.
Madhya Pradesh's Performance Under PMAY-U
Madhya Pradesh has established itself as one of the top-performing states in the implementation of PMAY-U. Across both PMAY-U and PMAY-U 2.0, more than 10.39 lakh houses have been sanctioned in the state, of which over 9.08 lakh have already been completed — a completion rate that places it among the national leaders in urban affordable housing delivery.
Notably, the latest round of sanctions and completions comes as the Centre scales up PMAY-U 2.0 nationally, with a target to support an additional one crore families from the EWS (Economically Weaker Section), LIG (Low Income Group), and MIG (Middle Income Group) categories across urban India.
Scope of PMAY-U 2.0 and Financial Assistance
Under PMAY-U 2.0, eligible beneficiaries can receive financial assistance of up to ₹2.5 lakh for constructing, purchasing, or renting a pucca house. The scheme covers urban households that lack a permanent dwelling, with a particular focus on first-time homeowners from lower-income segments.
The Madhya Pradesh event signals continued momentum in the Centre's urban housing drive, with further rollouts expected across other states in the coming months.
