Adani Electricity Intensifies Measures Against Power Theft, Achieves Notable Loss Reduction
Mumbai, Dec 18 (NationPress) Adani Electricity revealed on Wednesday that it has initiated a substantial number of FIRs against individuals involved in power theft during the April-September period of this year – 622 compared to 439 for the same timeframe last year – thereby achieving a significant reduction in losses.
The company under the Adani Group stated that these actions have resulted in a 0.7 percent decrease in Aggregate Technical and Commercial (AT&C) losses, lowering them to 4.56 percent over the last six months, from 5.26 percent in the previous six months.
In pursuit of this reduction, Adani Electricity has amplified its vigilant efforts. The company conducted 18,255 mass raids in high-loss areas, marking a considerable increase from the 11,408 raids carried out during the same period last year.
According to Adani Electricity, this led to the registration of 5,475 theft cases, a rise from 3,757 during the corresponding timeframe.
The vigilance team also managed to recover a significant quantity of illegal materials – 32.9 tons of illegal wires – and estimated the value of stolen electricity at Rs. 24.65 crore (based on 13.06 million units).
"Power theft imposes an unfair burden on honest consumers. Adani Electricity is dedicated to eradicating this issue. By tackling such illegal activities, we protect the interests of our clients. We will persist in intensifying our initiatives in specific areas to further lower AT&C losses," stated a company spokesperson.
This accomplishment positions Adani Electricity among the discoms with the lowest AT&C losses nationwide, given its extensive network and varied consumer base.
For instance, on September 3, Adani Electricity's vigilance team uncovered a case involving substantial electricity theft amounting to Rs 48 lakh against tenant Umesh Harsukhlal Shah, Shashank Umesh Shah (operating a plastic bag manufacturing unit), and owner Mirza Gauasuddin MA Baig in Asalfa, Ghatkopar.
On May 27, the vigilance team discovered a theft worth Rs 6,41,000 at Ganesh Nagar, Charkop, Kandivali, involving customer Ankitbhai Vaviya, who runs an electroplating business. The accused had tampered with the electricity supply meter, resulting in under-recording of the Y and B phases, the company reported.
Adani Electricity noted that it collaborates with police authorities to carry out regular raids, apprehend offenders, and seize equipment used for power theft.
During the period from April 2024 to September 2024, a considerable amount of unauthorized electricity, specifically 13.06 million units, was identified and addressed.
"Power theft adversely impacts infrastructure, especially in high-demand areas such as slum clusters where upgrades are difficult. The extra pressure from power theft strains existing infrastructure, causing increased maintenance costs due to more frequent failures of cables and transformers," the company stated.
