Adnoc signs 10-year deal to supply 4 million tonnes of LNG to Gujarat Energy
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Abu Dhabi National Oil Company (Adnoc) has signed a 10-year liquefied natural gas (LNG) supply agreement with Gujarat Energy Ltd (GEL), committing to deliver up to 4 million tonnes of LNG annually starting 2028, as the UAE state-owned energy giant deepens its foothold in India's rapidly expanding gas market.
Key Details of the Agreement
The deal, structured as a long-term Sales and Purchase Agreement (SPA), will see LNG supplied from the international gas portfolio of XRG, Adnoc's global investment company. Notably, this marks the first sale from XRG's international gas portfolio, signalling a strategic milestone for the Abu Dhabi-based conglomerate's global ambitions beyond the Gulf region.
Deliveries to GEL are set to begin in 2028, with the agreement bolstering India's long-term energy security at a time when the country is aggressively expanding its natural gas infrastructure.
Adnoc's Growing India Portfolio
This is Adnoc's fifth LNG supply agreement in India, underscoring the country's rising importance as a destination market. Earlier, in January 2026, Adnoc Gas signed a $3 billion deal with Hindustan Petroleum Corporation (HPCL) to supply 0.5 million metric tonnes of LNG annually over 10 years. With the latest GEL agreement, the cumulative value of Adnoc's contracts with Indian entities now reportedly exceeds $20 billion.
Adnoc's Chief Marketing and Origination Officer (LNG) Rashid Al Mazrouei said the agreement strengthens the company's long-standing energy partnership with Indian customers. 'Through our integrated LNG marketing and trading platform, we are connecting our growing international portfolio with customers in key regions across the global markets, while providing India with reliable, flexible and long-term LNG supplies,' he said.
What Gujarat Energy Brings to the Table
GEL Managing Director Avantika Singh Aulakh said the partnership would allow both companies to realise the potential of their collaboration. She highlighted that GEL operates regasification infrastructure and a city gas network spanning 44 districts across six states, alongside a fast-growing trading presence in India.
'Natural gas is central to driving India's shift toward cleaner energy, acting as a crucial lower-carbon option that boosts industrial efficiency, offers households a safer cooking fuel, and accelerates the growth of eco-friendly transportation,' Aulakh said.
XRG's Global Platform Takes Shape
The agreement was enabled by Adnoc's global LNG marketing and trading platform, launched at Abu Dhabi Global Market in July 2026. The platform has since secured supply agreements with Inpex in Japan and Gulf Group in Thailand, in addition to GEL in India — widening Adnoc's reach across Asia's key LNG demand centres.
Adnoc targets 47 million tonnes per annum (mtpa) of marketable LNG beyond 2030, a volume that would place it among the world's leading LNG suppliers. The GEL deal is a concrete demonstration of how XRG can route molecules from its international portfolio to end-markets well beyond the Gulf.
Why This Matters for India
India is pursuing a target of raising natural gas's share in its primary energy mix from roughly 6% to 15% by 2030, with LNG imports playing a central role. Long-term supply agreements such as this one provide price visibility and supply certainty — both critical as India's city gas distribution network expands. This comes amid broader India-UAE energy cooperation that has accelerated significantly in recent years, backed by bilateral trade and investment frameworks.
The next phase to watch is the commencement of deliveries in 2028, and whether Adnoc's XRG platform secures further Indian offtake agreements as its global portfolio grows.
