Shivraj Singh Chouhan Introduces Innovative Agricultural Roadmaps to Enhance Farm Profits in Madhya Pradesh
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
New Delhi, April 12 (NationPress) The Union Agriculture Minister, Shivraj Singh Chouhan, introduced a pioneering set of district-specific agricultural roadmaps for four districts in Madhya Pradesh—Sehore, Raisen, Vidisha, and Dewas—on Sunday. These roadmaps are designed to enhance farm profitability while promoting sustainable methods and the efficient use of resources.
These roadmaps were unveiled on the second day of the three-day ‘Unnat Krishi Mahotsav’ taking place in Raisen. This significant event has gathered a diverse group of stakeholders, including farmers, scientists, agronomists, government officials, and agricultural equipment companies.
While addressing the audience, Chouhan highlighted the importance of transitioning from merely increasing agricultural yields to selecting the “right crops” that align with local agro-climatic conditions. He encouraged farmers to diversify away from traditional crops like wheat, paddy, and soybean, advocating for a shift towards allied activities such as animal husbandry, horticulture, beekeeping, and organic farming to boost their incomes.
The district-specific strategies emphasize efficient water management, crop diversification, climate-resilient agriculture, and improved market connectivity. Given the rising concern of groundwater depletion in these areas, the roadmap prioritizes water conservation and the optimal use of available resources.
Chouhan pointed out the lucrative opportunities in high-value agriculture, mentioning crops like tomato, onion, garlic, and capsicum, alongside fruits such as pomegranate. He also urged farmers to explore innovative crops like dragon fruit and avocado.
A standout feature of this initiative is the establishment of ‘seed villages’ at the block level to ensure farmers have access to top-quality seeds.
“Creating around 10 of these villages per block could potentially boost productivity by up to 20%,” Chouhan remarked.
This program will receive backing from various central and state government schemes, with technical support from the Indian Council of Agricultural Research.
To tackle the challenges related to farm mechanization, Chouhan suggested the expansion of custom hiring centers and ‘machine banks’ at the panchayat level, allowing small and marginal farmers to access modern equipment at reasonable costs.
The initiative is set to expand to encompass all districts in Madhya Pradesh, ensuring effective implementation through a synergy of central and state schemes at the grassroots level,” Chouhan concluded.
