Anthropic Faces Supply Chain Risk Designation; CEO Issues Apology to Trump
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
New Delhi, March 6 (NationPress) The American AI firm Anthropic has officially been classified as a “Supply Chain Risk (SCR)” by the US government. In addition to this news, the company’s CEO has issued an apology for his remarks regarding President Donald Trump.
On March 4, the firm received a notification confirming its SCR designation, which it intends to contest in court.
CEO Dario Amodei expressed regret for a leaked memo in which he criticized President Trump, labeling the prior assessment as “out-of-date” and clarifying that it does not represent the organization’s stance.
In a blog entry, Amodei stated that Anthropic does not see the SCR classification under 10 U.S.C. 3252 as “legally sound”, asserting that the statute is “narrow” and meant to “protect the government rather than to punish a supplier”.
He highlighted that both the Department of War and Anthropic are committed to enhancing US national security and share the urgency of leveraging AI across government operations. The language from the DoW aligns with Anthropic’s earlier statement that most customers remain unaffected by the SCR designation.
Amodei further explained that the SCR designation would only impact the use of Anthropic’s Claude models in Department of War contracts and would not limit “all use of Claude by customers who have such contracts”.
The post criticizing Trump was written shortly after the President’s announcement on Truth Social about Anthropic’s removal from all federal systems, and Amodei noted that it was a “difficult day for the company”.
Individuals or businesses with contracts from Anthropic will still have full access to Claude—via API, claude.ai, or any of the company's services, without restrictions.
For Department of War contractors, should the SCR designation be formally enacted, it would solely affect their usage of Claude for DoW contract work, while all other uses remain unaffected.
Additionally, Indian tech giant Infosys recently unveiled a partnership with Anthropic to create and provide advanced enterprise AI solutions in sectors like telecommunications, financial services, manufacturing, and software development.
