Government Allocates Rs 299 Crore to Enhance Rural Governance in Assam

New Delhi, March 8 (NationPress) On Sunday, the Centre announced the release of more than Rs 299 crore aimed at bolstering Panchayati Raj Institutions (PRIs) and Rural Local Bodies (RLBs) in Assam, as part of the 15th Finance Commission (XV-FC) grants for the fiscal year 2025–26.
As per the Ministry of Panchayati Raj, this disbursement includes the second tranche of Untied Grants for the fiscal year 2025–26, which totals Rs 256.60 crore.
The allocation will support a total of 27 District Panchayats (DPs), 182 Block Panchayats (BPs), and 2,192 Gram Panchayats (GPs) across the state.
Furthermore, the grants will also be provided to three Autonomous District Councils (ADCs) in Assam: the Bodoland Territorial Council (BTC), Karbi Anglong Autonomous Council (KAAC), and Dima Hasao Autonomous Council (DHAC).
Additionally, the Centre has released Rs 42.70 crore from the withheld amount of the first instalment of Untied Grants for FY 2025–26 to the three ADCs after they qualified for the funds.
The Government of India, via the Ministry of Panchayati Raj and the Ministry of Jal Shakti (Department of Drinking Water and Sanitation), endorses the disbursement of XV-FC grants to various states for the support of Panchayati Raj Institutions and rural local bodies. The Ministry of Finance is responsible for the eventual release of these funds.
The allocated grants are systematically recommended and provided in two instalments each financial year.
According to the ministry, the Untied Grants are intended for use by PRIs and RLBs to address specific local needs across 29 subjects outlined in the Eleventh Schedule of the Constitution, excluding expenses related to salaries and other administrative costs.
The Tied Grants can be allocated for essential services such as sanitation maintenance to uphold the open defecation-free (ODF) status, which includes managing household waste, human excreta, and faecal sludge.
These funds can also be utilized for the provision of drinking water, along with initiatives for rainwater harvesting and water recycling.
