Seoul, April 1 (NationPress) The daily active users (DAU) of ChatGPT, an innovative generative artificial intelligence (AI) platform by OpenAI, achieved a remarkable peak last month, propelled by the allure of its novel image filter that converts personal photographs into renowned Japanese animation-style artworks, according to industry data released on Tuesday.
ChatGPT's DAU reached an unprecedented 1.25 million as of last Thursday, a significant increase from 1.03 million on March 10 and 790,000 on March 1, based on data from industry analyst IGAWorks.
This rapid expansion is attributed to OpenAI's latest image-generation tool, which empowers users to transform their photos into illustrations reminiscent of Studio Ghibli films, as reported by Yonhap news agency.
Studio Ghibli, founded by Hayao Miyazaki, is a renowned Japanese animation studio acclaimed for iconic films such as “My Neighbor Totoro,” “Howl’s Moving Castle,” and “Spirited Away.”
The innovative image tool attracted worldwide attention when OpenAI's Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Sam Altman changed his profile picture on X (formerly Twitter) to a Ghibli-style rendition of himself, igniting a surge in user enthusiasm.
However, the spike in AI-generated animated images has prompted concerns regarding copyright and technological challenges.
Altman mentioned that OpenAI intends to implement rate limits on the feature, stating, “Our graphic processing units are melting.”
In a post on social media platform X, he remarked: “Can y’all please chill on generating images? This is insane; our team needs sleep (sic).”
Despite his request, many users remained unconvinced, with some even suggesting he should dismiss his team. In response to one such comment, Altman defended his team, highlighting their achievement of creating one of the largest websites in the world in just 2.33 years.
“No thanks. In addition to building AGI, this team is on trajectory to build the biggest website in the world from a cold start 2.33 years ago,” Altman replied.
On March 25, OpenAI unveiled its latest AI-driven image generator, integrated with ChatGPT’s GPT-4o model. This feature enables users to iteratively refine images while ensuring consistency across various edits. Since its initiation, user engagement has surged, with many experimenting by converting images into diverse artistic styles, including those inspired by Studio Ghibli.
