Dedicated to Establishing India as a Semiconductor Manufacturing Leader and Developing a Skilled Workforce: Ashwini Vaishnaw

Guwahati, Jan 3 (NationPress) The Central government is dedicated to positioning India as a premier hub for semiconductor manufacturing, while simultaneously cultivating a skilled workforce that aligns with the dynamic demands of the industry, stated Union Railways and Electronics and IT Minister, Ashwini Vaishnaw, during a recent event.

Upon inaugurating the National Institute of Electronics and Information Technology (NIELIT), which is recognized as a university across 12 locations including five in the northeastern states, the minister articulated that this university is poised to play a vital role in equipping students with essential skills to excel in a swiftly evolving technological landscape.

He remarked that the term northeast now signifies a “New Engine” for driving the development and progress of the nation.

During the ceremony, a memorandum of understanding (MoU) was executed between NIELIT and Tata Electronics Private Ltd (TEPL) aimed at collaboratively advancing the semiconductor skilling ecosystem in India.

The MoU was signed by Dr M.M. Tripathi, Director General of NIELIT, and Dr Randhir Thakur, CEO and MD of TEPL.

This partnership is set to create skill centers, formulate diploma and certification programs, and conduct workshops in semiconductor ATMP (Assembly, Testing, Marking, and Packaging) technologies.

TEPL will provide technical expertise and internship opportunities, while NIELIT will direct its efforts towards education, training, and outreach.

Both entities will also jointly seek research and funding opportunities, particularly focusing on generating prospects in the northeastern region, as stated by the government.

The minister announced the initiation of NIELIT University, emphasizing that it is driven by the Prime Minister's vision to prepare professionals in cutting-edge domains such as Semiconductor Manufacturing, Artificial Intelligence, Industry 4.0, and Quantum Computing.

Vaishnaw mentioned that a new campus of NIELIT will be established in Jagiroad town near Guwahati, concentrating on semiconductor and electronics manufacturing.

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma echoed Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision of a future where the global market will depend on semiconductor chips that are “Made in India” and “Made in Assam”.

He highlighted the remarkable potential for the semiconductor sector to flourish in the region, stressing the urgent need for a skilled workforce and trained personnel to bolster this emerging industry.

“This highlights the commitment to nurturing local talent and generating employment opportunities, ensuring that Assam holds a significant position in the global technology arena,” Sarma stated.
