New Delhi, Aug 15 (NationPress) On the auspicious occasion of the 79th Independence Day, the government has unveiled a FASTag-based annual toll pass for private vehicles. This annual pass is available for Rs 3,000.

This facility is applicable for cars, jeeps, and vans at toll plazas operated by the National Highways Authority of India and the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways.

The pass remains valid for a duration of one year from the activation date or until 200 toll trips are completed, whichever comes first. Once this limit is reached, the FASTag will automatically revert to the standard pay-per-trip mode. For point-based toll plazas, each one-way crossing counts as a trip, while a return journey counts as two trips. In a closed or ticketed system, a full entry-to-exit journey is considered one trip.

This pass is strictly for non-commercial private vehicles and is issued only to cars, jeeps, and vans registered for personal use. It is applicable on national highways and expressways supervised by the NHAI and MoRTH. State highway toll plazas are excluded unless they are integrated into the central FASTag system.

To acquire the pass, vehicle owners must possess an active FASTag linked to their registration number, which should be affixed to the windscreen. Additionally, they must not be blacklisted from obtaining the pass. Some FASTags, particularly those issued for new vehicles, may only be registered with the vehicle's chassis number. These FASTags must be updated to include the complete vehicle registration number for the annual pass to be activated.

The pass can be purchased via the Rajmarg Yatra mobile app, or through the NHAI or MoRTH websites, as well as authorized FASTag issuer portals. Payment for the pass, which costs Rs 3,000, can be made using UPI, debit/credit card, or net banking; FASTag wallet balances are not applicable for this transaction. Activation is typically processed within two hours and confirmed via SMS.

The average toll charge for a passenger vehicle stands at approximately Rs 50. Thus, completing 200 trips in a year without the pass would amount to around Rs 10,000. With the annual pass, the cost is fixed at Rs 3,000, resulting in a savings of about Rs 7,000 for frequent highway travelers.

Point of View

I believe this initiative by the government is a significant step toward modernizing toll collection and enhancing the travel experience for private vehicle owners. By introducing the FASTag-based annual toll pass, the government is not only simplifying travel but also promoting the use of digital payment systems, which is essential for a rapidly evolving transportation landscape.
